One of the things to be aware of if you are a bit of a handyman and want to build your own solar panel is the efficiency of the solar cell. This is important because, although you can, link up several solar cells to build your own solar panel at a fraction of the cost of commercial panels relatively easily, you will need to invest in solar cells.
Now, what we are doing here is two things, primarily we are wanting to cut our electricity bills by installing solar panels. The second object is to save money by doing it ourselves. Now this is where the efficiency of the solar cells are important. We need to balance cost against efficiency if we really want to save money because it is the final cost of your homes solar energy system that matters.
OK, right now you are probably think, yeah, well of course, the better the solar cells I install, the more efficient the system will be and the more money I will save. And you would be wrong.
We have talked about the different ways of producing solar cells in other articles, but in simple terms, there are two types we will look at here. Polycrystalline and mono crysalline.
Polycrystalline cells are build from small, multiple slices of silicon, whereas mono crystalline cells are built from one, larger slice. The later cells are certainly more efficient, a poly cell is rated somewhere between 16% and 20% efficient, a mono cell can be rated around 30% efficiency level. Logic would dictate that we should build our own panels with 30% efficiency panels. But wait a moment.
Mono crystalline panels are more complex to manufacture, their cost can, be several times more than polycrystalline. Ahh, now maybe the maths start to tumble into place, we are gaining a 10% increase in generation but at what cost? It may well be that we are not actually saving money at all.
So this is what we mean when we say you need to look past the sales talk and hype and balance the efficiency of the solar cell you are thinking of against the total cost to work out if it is economical or not.
- Q: How do solar panels affect the electricity bill?
- Solar panels can significantly reduce or even eliminate electricity bills by generating renewable energy from the sun, thereby reducing the reliance on grid-supplied electricity. When solar panels produce more energy than is consumed, excess energy can be fed back into the grid, resulting in credits or reducing future bills through net metering programs.
- Q: How much would solar panels cost for: A Cell phoneA average houseA car
- in case you recognize the place to look you get get image voltaic panels for 0 expenses. as an occasion, numerous sign companies use image voltaic panels. touch your interior sight sign company and tell them you will haul off all their broken image voltaic panel for loose. they're oftentimes extra beneficial than keen to assist you are trying this.
- Q: Exactly How much power will this kit produce? for example. Will it only be able to power the 2 light throughout an entire day or would it be able to power a couple TV's with a couple lights. Or a Refrigerator? washer dryer? I'm just wondering exactly what it will be able to do and if it's worth paying $200 for if it'll only power two lights. Don't get me wrong, That's great and will make a difference but i'm looking for something that will make a little bit of a bigger difference. Would the 80 watt monocrystalline solar panel be much better? if so, what would it be able to power? double?
- Yes, 80 watts will be nearly twice as useful as 45 watts - but 80 is still a small number. Solar panel systems need an inverter and there's a slight energy loss at the inverter. And, if you want to use the day's energy at night, you'll need a battery or two. And every time you move energy into or out of a battery, you lose a little of the energy. All this is to say that you need to sum up the wattage of your appliances and add a fudge factor to accommodate for the losses. I looked at the kit and was moderately impressed. $200/45=$4.44/watt; that's a reasonable price but the links I left below talk of prices as low as $2.58/watt. Also the Harbor Freight kit doesn't contain an 'inverter' which you would have to buy. Also the wattage advertised for any solar panel assumes the thing is clean and pointed right at the sun on a clear day.
- Q: I had someone quote me for solar panels on my house but I can't afford it. They were talking about how I have enough room and the perfect location to put many of them and actually get paid for it. I have about a half acre that is tiered and points in the correct direction for them to get pretty much the full day sun. Additionally, I live in so cal where it is sunny most of the year. Does anyone know if solar companies will lease or install them to get the payback? I would be happy to allow them to use the land just to cover my electrical expense and they could have any payback.

- Q: I was hearing that we need silver as a medal for the creation of solar panels, is this true? How much silver would be needed to make one solar panel? (if this is true)
- Some research has shown that small amounts of silver can improve the efficiency of solar panels. But this appears to be in the research stage and applies to the the thin film solar cells. Some solar panels makes use silver as the wiring in kind of a screen printing process, but you don't need to use silver, you can use copper or aluminum using different techniques instead. Generally the metal used is in small amounts and not a majority of the cost of the solar panel.
- Q: I thought that I had a fairly good understanding of watt's law, but i'm starting to doubt myself. If I have a load of 4500watts at 240 volts, how many watts of solar panels do I need, if the solar panels are at 2v?Yes, Yes... I have a charge controller, batteries, etc...So the way I looked at this at first:watts = volts * amps For the load4500 = 240 * xx would be 8.75aFor the power source (each solar panel)00 = 2 * xx would be 8.3a8.75 / 8.3 = 2.25, rounded up = 3So... based on that I came to the conclusion that I needed 3 solar panels...But... then I was thinking. Does it work that way?Or do I need 4500 / 00 = 45, aka 45 solar panels? In other words...If I have a 2v power source, how many watts do I need to drive a load of 4500w at 240v?ThanksMatt

- Q: Do solar panels require a specific type of inverter for converting DC to AC power?
- Yes, solar panels do require a specific type of inverter, known as a DC to AC inverter, to convert the direct current (DC) generated by the panels into alternating current (AC) power that can be used in homes and businesses.
- Q: How long does it take a 5 watt, 2 volt solar panel to charge a 2 volt R.V. battery?
- Most solar panels have something called a charge controller on them. This prevents electricity from going backwards from the battery to the panel. Solar panels are rated at 2V but they do put out a little more than that during full sun operation. You didn't specify the size of your battery but it really doesn't matter. It comes down to your consumption of power. If you are only charging the RV battery so it maintains a charge when you don't use it very much, a 5 watt panel is fine. It will charge the battery and keep the small drains on the battery from making it go dead ( the clock radio, the theft deterrent system, etc use power even when RV is off) But if you are using the battery to run things when you are parked, you probably don't have a big enough panel. If you use a 30watt fluorescent light and a 00 watt laptop, you need 30 watts of power saved up every hour in your battery and that's with no inefficiencies. So if your panel puts out 5 watts an hour and you are using 30 watts an hour, you need 30 watts/ 5 watts = 9 hours minimum of charge time to run your stuff for just one hour. You probably need a panel of around a 00 watts to get any meaningful use of your battery. Plus, you never want to run your battery to full drain because it ruins the plates inside the battery. Watts = volts x amps. If you have 2 volts panels, you would charge at 8 amps with a 00 watt panel. This is a good charge rate. Any more than this and you risk warping the plates with too much heat.
- Q: trees vs solar panels who would win?
- Trees for sure. Their already plotting the overthrow of humans.
- Q: I live in the UK, I have no savings (so would have to take out a loan of about ?8000), I don't know how long I plan to stay in my house, I might want to move in a year or two to take advantage of a better job so I want to keep the option open of being able to sell my house without having to pay off the cost of having the panels fitted (which I probably won't get back on the increased value they add to my house). What are the main advantages of having solar panels? What are the pitfalls the ever so eager cold callers with quotas to fill don't tell you about?Basically is it worth having them?Thankyou.
