- Q: I heard a state legislator today on the radio talking about taxing home gardens that grow vegetables and other produce. This state is in serious economic trouble and they are looking at every possible source of revenue. The legislator stated that many home gardeners sell their produce at flea markets and do not pay any sales tax, that the produce grown even if not sold amounts to income and should be taxed. What do you think if the feasibility and practicality of this?
- You know exactly what to do about this State Legislator - organise people to come together - esp those with home grown vegetables and fruit for sale, to vote him/her out of office next time around. But please do always bear in mind the following. Everything is taxable - Benjamin Disraeli - Victorian British Prime Minister. But, in a democracy it's up to the people to elect representative from their own ranks. Failure on their part then results in the sort of quasi fascist nonsense which you have described. In other words, this Legislator is trying to impose a tax on food - result, mass starvation. POWER TO THE PEOPLE

- Haier, Maytag...those are pretty good

- Q: I plan on starting a good sized garden where I will grow as many vegetables as I can. This will be to save money on groceries, eat healthier (since they'll all be just right there), and with whatever excess I'll take to the farmers market for other people to enjoy, while at the same time trying to pay for my garden investment! So I'm hoping in the following years the pay off will be saved money on groceries, learned a lot, got exercise, and maybe make a little supplemental funds on the side to pay for bills and such, but at first to pay for the garden itself....
- Hi Oakfur I have Italian truck patch farmers who live down the street from me who have been doing that very thing for years and make a good living doing it. Get ready for some hard work though, and consider what you could make on any other job available to you. With a small garden, I would think you'd spend a lot of time with very little produce to sell so on an hourly basis it may not be worth it. Try it and see, you have nothing but a little time to lose and you'll sure cut your grocery bill. Hope this helps
- Q: We are looking to buy a home with 3 rural acres and I have been told it has a 6 gpm well. I like to garden and wonder if I will be able to have garden and flowers trees etc...? Can we just buy a holding tank for water? Coming from the city any help or advice will be appreciated
- I am rural with a well and septic, and did not know the gpm for my well. I just googled it, and a government website said anything 5 gpm and up should meet normal household peak use. In addition, you will have a 20 or 40 gallon pressure tank that holds water, so your well pump will be able to cycle on and off less. The well pump fills the pressure tank, and the faucets draw from the pressure tank until it gets too empty, then the well pump fills the tank again. this is done because well pumps are pricey and you don't want them to run every time you turn on the faucet to wash your hands or rinse a dish. I have a 60' by 60' garden, and have no problems watering it with my regular household well. I live in MN and have a lot of clay in my soil, so I only have to water when I first put transplants in the garden, and maybe 3 times in July-August during dry spells. If you are in a dryer climate, or it's a drought, or you have sandy soil, you will have to water more often than I do. Don't make your garden too big at first, or you will break your back. It is hard work, and you will make mistakes, and you have to learn to preserve the veggies and fruit that you grow. Plant trees right away, since they take years to size up. get more than one variety of apple or other fruit tree that needs cross-pollination, and don't plant trees too close together.
- Q: whats the value of a 1945 home and garden magazine?
- Not much...entertainment/curiosity value only. I've got old Ladies Home Journals circa 1895 I got for a buck about 20 years ago. . Fun reading but really not worth much, about 5 bucks ea, maybe. I like them for their 'advertizements.
- Q: why do they come into the house and how do you get ride of them
- Have you tried to ask this question in Home Garden? I'm sure that crowd would be far more useful than a forum dedicated to questions about pets...
- Q: I have a relatively small garden and I would like to take take care of the pests using an organic treatment. Any suggestions for DIY remedies, or commercial products?
- I too have a small garden. I have stopped using pesticides. When there is a really bad infestation of greenfly or those grey/black larva that hide under the cherry leaves etc I hose them off with water (A garden sprayer that takes about 5 litres, can be pumped up to a reasonable pressure and has a shoulder strap so it is easily transportable) If it is really bad I spray them with ecological soap mixed with water. But strange to say that since stopping the use of pesticides a natural balance of predatory insects seems to have become established, and I have no real problems anymore. I admit to using stuff called Bordeaux mixture on my roses - a fungicide.
- Q: Home & Garden Party or Home Interiors? Which would you prefer to shop with? & Why?
- If I had to choose one I would say Home Interiors I think the quality is just as good today as it was years ago. I like more of the product line. Personally I would only buy unusual items I haven't seen anywhere.
