- The alarm is pretty loud, they made the new iPhone's speaker louder than the old version, and yes it does wake from sleep mode. I just tested it, and my girlfriend jumped up from her desk halfway across the house to find out what the heck the loud noise was. :) Sleep mode basically shuts the screen off, but everything else is running in the background still, including alarms, getting emails, etc. Jolo
