Q: Hi, I live in the Boston area and I'm trying to find a steel suppler that can provide mild steel for hobby welding. I can go through my job, but we only put in orders every couple of months so it's not very convenient. Also, the few suppliers I've found only sell in bulk. So if anyone knows where I can angle irons, flat bars, sheets, etc... by the piece it would greatly appreciated. Thanks
They will sell any quantity of metal and even cut it to size - my experience has been that their prices are not wildly out of line for single pieces of full length stock compared to buying singles where you have to buy a minimum. They also may have sizes that ordinary places consider odd. I was looking for 5/8 square 16 gauge and was told it would have to be shipped in from Houston (to Dallas) by my nearest supplier and found it in stock at MetalSM. But check if you get something odd - the 5/8 cost more than 3/4 at both places and MetalSM actually gave me 3/4 but took it back even though I had cut it. Also check the regular steel suppliers in your area as well as retail welders metal supply places.
Q: Ok I have a neodymium magnet, stuck to my fridge holding a old bottle cap opener for my beer it works fine. At the local rummage sale there was a beautiful cap opener my freind was selling for $0.25 she said had never beenUsed it was like 40 years old it is made a stainless steel. The magnet will not stick to it. I don't understand this looked this up and certain steels are not magnetic, I tried a experiment with my compass it don't point north as should it follows the bottle opener as I move it around it. If not magnetic why is this happening? Also tried placing near another neodymium magnet with a pull of about 200 lbs. Not I tiny bit of attraction to the metal. If so why is the tiny magnet in the compass attracted to it. But not a huge powerfull magnet.
That's interesting that it caused deflection in the compass. A lot of stainless steels may be SLIGHTLY magnetic, because they have small amounts of ferrite or alpha-iron in them. Ferrite is one of the crystal phases of steel. It has a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure and it's responsible for the magnetism of ordinary steels. Adding certain elements like nickel, manganese, or molybdenum, changes the crystal structure of the steel to a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure, which is NOT magnetic. This crystal phase is known as Austenite or gamma-iron. However most iron alloys contain some impurities that may cause the steel to be not completely transformed into the FCC austenite phase, small areas remain as ferrite.
Q: Im getting a new guitar soon, and it has steel strings. ive heard that nilon strings are better? thanks:)
Nylon strings aren't better The very notion of such is absurd. They're different. They sound different and feel different. Different guitars are designed for different types of strings. Nylon string guitars are most commonly associated with classical music (you'll never see a real classical musician play a steel string guitar) Whoever told you that nylon strings are better should be ignored altogether. They're obviously not a good source of information.
Q: Why is steel so important? How does it help us in everyday life?
steel comes from iron. Iron is a natural resource and is abundent in nature. so being able to turn it into steel means it can be used for alllll sorts of things! from buildings, cars, piping and tubes, to washing machines, appliances and many other things. its used in our everyday life and is a great, strong material.
Q: What are the common size limitations for steel coils?
The size limitations for steel coils can vary depending on the specific requirements of the industry or application. However, there are commonly followed general size limitations in the steel manufacturing and distribution industry. Steel coils can have a width ranging from as narrow as 0.25 inches (6.35 mm) to as wide as 72 inches (1828.8 mm). This wide range allows for versatility in various applications, including automotive parts and construction materials. The thickness of steel coils can vary significantly, usually ranging from 0.006 inches (0.15 mm) to 0.5 inches (12.7 mm). Thinner coils are often used when lighter weight and flexibility are required, while thicker coils are commonly used in heavy-duty applications that require strength and durability. Consideration should also be given to the weight of steel coils, especially for transportation and handling purposes. Steel coils can typically weigh anywhere from a few hundred pounds to several tons. The weight limitations depend on factors such as the size of the coil, the steel grade, and the transportation and storage equipment used. Additionally, there are limitations on the outer and inner diameter of steel coils. The outer diameter usually ranges from 24 inches (609.6 mm) to 72 inches (1828.8 mm), while the inner diameter can vary from 16 inches (406.4 mm) to 24 inches (609.6 mm). These dimensions are crucial for ensuring compatibility with processing equipment and storage racks. It is important to note that these size limitations are not fixed and can be customized based on specific requirements. Steel manufacturers and distributors often collaborate closely with their customers to determine the optimal size and dimensions of the coils, ensuring efficient handling and processing.
Q: it isn't a SIGG water bottle or any other brand, as it's from thingsengraved what I'm wondering is, is this just as good as a SIGG water bottle, or is there any difference?
The problem with stainless steel water bottles is the steel takes even longer to decompose in our landfills then plastic its self. So it just adds to the waste. If you use steel be sure to recycle it when you are done using it. Another problem is the fact that we don't really make steel here anymore so you have to pollute the environment shipping steel here that the bottles are made from. It gets ship here on trucks, ships, and what not. Very big polluters!! You'd be better off just getting a reuseable bpa free plastic water bottle made in the usa. Or some of those expensive corn cups.
Q: ok I got a dpms ar 15 and all i have put though it is good brass 223 ammo but is it ok to shoot the old crappy steel cased wolf ammo out of it will it hurt its function or will it hurt it cosmetically?
The Wolf ammo and the rest of its ilk also has steel bullet jackets, so it will wear your barrel faster than copper jacketed ammo. Plus you can't reload it. I've also seen a few manufacturers say not to use it as pressures may be erratic. I wouldn't buy it to shoot unless I was shooting it in someone else's rifle, I would buy it to stash though.
Q: How do steel coils contribute to strength and durability in manufacturing?
Steel coils contribute to strength and durability in manufacturing in several ways. Firstly, steel is an inherently strong material due to its high tensile strength, which allows it to withstand heavy loads and resist deformation. When steel is coiled, it undergoes a process called hot rolling or cold rolling, which further enhances its strength and durability. During hot rolling, the steel is heated to high temperatures and then passed through a series of rollers, which compress and shape it into a coil. This process aligns the grain structure of the steel, making it more uniform and reducing internal stresses. The result is a stronger and more resilient material that can withstand the rigors of manufacturing processes such as bending, stamping, and forming without losing its structural integrity. Cold rolling, on the other hand, involves passing the steel through rollers at room temperature. This process not only increases the strength and hardness of the steel but also improves its surface finish. Cold-rolled steel coils are known for their smooth and uniform appearance, making them ideal for applications where aesthetics are important. Furthermore, steel coils can be coated with various protective layers to enhance their durability. These coatings, such as zinc or polymer-based coatings, act as barriers against corrosion, moisture, and other environmental factors that can weaken the steel. By preventing rust and degradation, these coatings extend the lifespan of steel coils and the products they are used in, making them more durable and cost-effective in the long run. In summary, steel coils contribute to strength and durability in manufacturing by providing a strong and resilient material that can withstand heavy loads and resist deformation. The hot rolling and cold rolling processes further enhance the strength and uniformity of the steel, while protective coatings help to prevent corrosion and extend the lifespan of the coils. Overall, steel coils are essential components in manufacturing that contribute to the strength and durability of a wide range of products.
Q: What are the common methods of transporting steel coils?
There are several common methods of transporting steel coils, depending on the distance, quantity, and specific requirements of the shipment. The most commonly used methods include: 1. Flatbed trucks: This is the most basic and widely used method for short-distance transportation of steel coils. Flatbed trucks have a flat, open trailer bed that allows for easy loading and unloading of the coils. The coils are secured and strapped down to prevent movement during transit. 2. Rail transport: For longer distances, rail transport is often preferred due to its cost-effectiveness and efficiency. Coils are loaded onto specially designed railcars, known as coil cars or gondola cars, which have curved troughs or cradles to hold the coils securely in place. This method is particularly advantageous for large quantities of steel coils. 3. Ocean freight: When transporting steel coils internationally or over long distances across oceans, shipping by sea is a common method. The coils are typically loaded into specialized shipping containers, known as coil containers or coiled steel containers, which have internal cradles to prevent movement and damage during transit. These containers are then loaded onto cargo ships for transportation. 4. Barge transport: In regions with navigable waterways, barges can be used to transport steel coils. Similar to ocean freight, the coils are loaded into specially designed containers or barges with cradles to secure them during transport. Barges offer an economical and environmentally friendly option, especially for inland waterway transportation. 5. Intermodal transport: In some cases, a combination of different modes of transportation may be used for transporting steel coils. This is referred to as intermodal transport. For example, steel coils may be initially transported by truck to a rail yard, where they are then loaded onto railcars for long-distance transport. This method allows for the advantages of different modes of transportation to be combined, optimizing cost and efficiency. It is worth noting that the specific method of transporting steel coils may vary depending on factors such as coil size, weight, destination, and any specific handling requirements.
Q: How are steel coils used in the manufacturing of bridges?
Steel coils are used in the manufacturing of bridges as they are rolled into structural shapes, such as beams and columns, that provide the necessary strength and support for the bridge. These coils are then fabricated, welded, and assembled to create the various components of the bridge, ensuring it can withstand heavy loads and withstand the test of time.
