Q: I have an apartment building that has mold in it. I'm trying to do everything I can to increase the airflow. Sure, the tenants might have to spend a mint on heat, but if it improved the air quality, maybe it would be a good idea.: I doubt that is your best option. Check the roof for other venting souce like soffit vents, etc or even install an exhaust fan. Also, if this is a multistory building especially, look for other sources of mold nearer the affected areas. There are all kinds of ways mold can flourish - all have to do with moisture, but many if not most have nothing to do with airflow in the roof.

Q: I am really confused about this science stuff! Q: p/t deck on a commercial rubber roof do we need closed cell insulation under deck to protect rubber?: First I would put some walk pads down, I don't know if you can purchase them at your local home center. There should be a specialty store that sells vinyl siding they should have them they are about two foot by two foot rubber squares that have dots on them they look like suction cups. Place these pads dots down so that water will drain under the pads, then place a piece of 2" x 8" about 16" long of p/t blocking on top, this will help transfer the load of the deck on the rubber walk pad on the rubber roof. Place the pads and blocks where ever you place your 4" x 4" s You are now ready to start framing the deck. GOOD LUCK!!!

Q: We have recently moved into a house in Australia with a tin roof. There is a layer of 5cm batts on the rafters in the roof space, but the temp is 10-15 degrees C higher up there than in the house (with all the windows and doors open). I don't want to get air-conditioning, is there another way to insulate the roof and cool the house?: go and buy a roof whirly for every 10mtr. square ,, if you don't want to spend the money then try to put in more vents in the eves so more air can be drawn into the roof space... another thing that I have always thought of doing myself is to get shade cloth and cover over the roof but not touching the tin. Maybe a blind type of thing, where you could roll it up in winter when you want to get the roof hotter. .. anyhow I think whatever you do to redude the heat you must be able to retain the heat in winter if you do not want to use a heater as well... cool luck ''lol"

Q: We had a water leak in our pipes in our foundation and had to re-route our pipes along our roof. We have tried some really basic insulation for piping, but it usually deteriorates very quickly due to sun light and wind. What are some ways we can insulate our pipes effectively without having to re-insulate every month? This has to be something fairly simple and inexpensive. We aren't looking for perfect insulation, just something that will keep the water warm in the winter and cool in the summer.: Contact a local remodeling contractor and install the new piping system properly. Even a system under a foundation can be repaired, but it is not cheap to do it.

It depends on you're area and what you want to use the loft for. But the insulation will keep it ok inside. Just add some air bricks to encourage ventilation. This will keep you're heating bills down, and unless you're going to be living in the loft I really wouldn't worry. There are a lot of variables to consider. Just stick you're logical head on and you'll find your own answer. Just consider what the Canadians say; "Insulate tight and Ventilate right".

Q: attic is 400 sq ft.there are 4 round 6'' Vents in soffit,and 2 roof vents-12&quot;x12&quot;.Rock wool,blown in,R/30 NO VAPOR BARRIER.Why the mold?no gable or ridge vent either.How do i fix this?There are baffles in attic,rafters are not blocked.: You still don't have enough attic ventilation. Definitely need more soffit vents. Roof mounted turbine vents that turn in the wind help suck more air through the attic. This coupled with at least one gable end vent should stop further mold. Removing old mold is a hassle, but can be done using diluted bleach in a lawn pump sprayer. A respirator will be needed to ensure you can breathe while applying the bleach solution.
