Product description

A solar cell, or photovoltaic cell (in very early days also termed "solar battery"[1] – a denotation which nowadays has a totally different meaning, see here), is an electrical device that converts the energy of lightdirectly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect, which is a physical and chemical phenomenon.[2] It is a form of photoelectric cell, defined as a device whose electrical characteristics, such as current, voltage, or resistance, vary when exposed to light. Solar cells are the building blocks of photovoltaic modules, otherwise known as solar panels.

Solar cells are described as being photovoltaic irrespective of whether the source is sunlight or an artificial light. They are used as a photodetector (for example infrared detectors), detecting light or other electromagnetic radiation near the visible range, or measuring light intensity.

A photovoltaic (in short PV) module is a packaged, connected assembly of typically 6×10 solar cells. Solar Photovoltaic panels constitute the solar array of a photovoltaic system that generates and supplies solar electricity in commercial and residential applications. Each module is rated by its DC output power under standard test conditions, and typically ranges from 100 to 365 watts. The efficiency of a module determines the area of a module given the same rated output – an 8% efficient 230 watt module will have twice the area of a 16% efficient 230 watt module.

Q:Are solar panels suitable for residential use?
Yes, solar panels are highly suitable for residential use. They provide a sustainable and renewable source of energy, reduce electricity bills, and contribute to a cleaner environment. Additionally, advancements in technology have made solar panels more efficient and affordable, making them a practical choice for homeowners.
Q:So I reckon it's time to install some of these bad boys. it's come to point where electricity providers are charging such extortionate amounts that I can definitely see these reaping huge rewards before long. (Okay I might be exaggerating a little - they are pretty costly themselves). The problem is I've read around that they're only fitted to south facing houses? Why so? Why can't they be installed on the rear side of the roof - the side facing the garden? My house is facing north, so the front door leads north. Could I have solar panels installed on the back? (That's basically my question, with a bit of a rant too lol).Cheers.
You want the panels facing south because that is where they would get the most sunlight throughout the day. If your front door is facing north, then the back of your house would be facing south, right? So put them up in the back where they are facing south...haha wtf..
Q:What is the impact of roof color on solar panels' performance?
The impact of roof color on solar panels' performance is minimal. While a lighter-colored roof may reflect more sunlight onto the panels and potentially increase their efficiency, the difference is generally negligible. The key factors that affect solar panel performance are the angle, orientation, shading, and cleanliness of the panels, as well as the overall quality and technology of the panels themselves.
Q:Are solar panels recyclable?
Yes, solar panels are recyclable.
Q:Hoping to find instruction, materials list and hardware needed to construct solar panels myself, how many and make it happen instead of talking about it
Silica based solar cells are not the kind of thing you whomp up in you basement. Here are a couple ideas for solar systems you can build and install yourself. Take a 4 x 8 sheet of /2 inch plywood. Frame sides with 2 x 4's. Screw tin cans in a staggered row (checker board) pattern inside frame. The more cans the more heat you get so place them nearly touching. Paint cans and entire assembly flat black. Cover top with glass, plexiglass (best) or heavy mill clear plastic (cheapest)Place on roof. Drill 3-4 inch holes in opposing sides. Run pipe or tubing into house. Attach to small low speed fan. The black paint will absorb sunlight and heat. The air moving through box will carry heat into house. It's a cheap efficient way to help heat your home. You can vary size and shape of box to fit your roof. If you use more than one box, hook them up in series. More boxes mean more surface area means more heat. To heat water. Take a steel tank. A car gas tank works well. It is galvanized so it won't rust, is cheap, and easily available at any auto salvage yard. But you will have to flush in throughly to remove gasoline odor. A steel 55 gallon drum is easier to work with but may cost more. Paint exterior of tank flat black. Weld/glue/clamp water pipes to tank. Place on ground in area that gets lots of sunlight. Attach water supply to tank and route discharge pipe to house or appliance. Black painted steel absorbs heat from sun light and heats water. In spring and fall you get warm to hot water. In summer you get scalding hot water and in winter you get cold to luke warm water. Both of these solar powered systems are seasonal and their output varies according to location and climate, but they are very inexpensive and easy to build and provide FREE heat and/or hot water for many years with little or no maintainence.
Q:How do solar panels affect the appearance of a home or building?
Solar panels can have a positive impact on the appearance of a home or building. While they do add an additional element to the exterior, the sleek and modern design of most solar panels can enhance the aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the presence of solar panels conveys a sense of environmental responsibility, making the property more attractive to eco-conscious individuals.
Q:So lets say that Everyday I use ,280 kWh. How many 250 watt solar panels would I buy so that I don't need to buy electricity anymore. Sorry if this sounds stupid, I am doing research on why american homes should become more cost efficient.
I okorder /... Home Power (magazine)
Q:I'm just geting into electonics and stuff. So I am trying to make a simple USB charger. I'm looking for at least 4 volts output. What I've got is two solar panels (detached) a 4 AA battery holder, and a circuit board with an led on it (took the solar panels out of old lawn lights. I need more charge out of my panels (I think) so I tried attaching them. I soldered the positive wire from one to the positive connection on the other and negative wire to negative connection. After doing so and checking the multimeter, it says I have no output at all. How do you connect them?
Huh? you should have got something, in full sun, you should have gotten 3 or 4 volts, but milliamps in current. By connecting them pos. to pos., neg to neg,(paralell) it increases the current output. If you connect pos, on one, to neg. on the other, and measure between the remaining pos, and neg. you should have twice the voltage (series). You need 4 volts, but 4 AA's in series is 6 volts. If your going to use the panels to charge the batteries, you'll need a diode in series to prevent discharge during dark conditions, which the LED will work for.
Q:Why are they placed there? How come they aren't placed on the floor or window. My fiance and I are interested in putting solar panels on our new home. I was really curious and google wasn't giving me the answer. My roof is pretty small in our new house and I don't think it would fit there. Why is it usually placed there and is there another place? You will be chosen as best answer if you answer all my questions. Thanks in advance, and I would appreciate if nobody is rude. Otherwise, I will have to report abuse.
Solar panels are placed on the roof because many times the roof has good exposure to the sun providing the roof is not blocked by trees or something else so that sufficient sunlight wouldn't be absorbed. Also the panels would more likely not get damaged on the roof opposed to being in the yard. If they were mounted on the windows, how could you see? And, the windows could easily break and then what would happen to the panels? Placing the solar panels on the floor would not be practical. A lot of sunlight is needed for the cells to produce electricity and how much goes on the floor? Most roofs are at an angle which could perhaps improve the amount of sunlight the panels would get, and roofs provide a lot of unused space. The roof is the best place. Furthermore, roof solar panels are available now to blend in better with the roof so that they are more pleasing to the eye. Even if you have a small roof, some panels could be placed there provided the roof is not blocked so that the sunlight it gets would be sufficient (about 4 or 5 hours of sunlight a day is needed). And, if you needed addition panels, they could be mounted in your yard as long as the mount was close to your power box and received sufficient sunlight. I applaud your desire to use solar panels. You could possibly save 50 - 90% on your electric bill and help your environment at the same time! A Win - Win situation!!
Q:Can solar panels be installed on desalination plants?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on desalination plants. Solar energy can be harnessed to power the desalination process, reducing the reliance on traditional energy sources and making the plants more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
