Solar cells shouldn't need a voltage regulator for simple projects like driving motors or powering CMOS electronic circuits. I would need to know a little more on your goals for the project to help. However, I will put a few links that may be helpful to solar cells and some voltage regulators. The first link is general solar cell info and includes manufacturer lists at the end. Solar panels are one of the hottest areas in materials research today - from basic science to applied production techniques. There have been major strides in thin-film manufacturing technique as well as silicon technology. There's not a lot of hype about it because solar panel manufacturers don''t really need to advertise yet - they are selling at factory capacity with demand for more. Standard silicon solar panels now sell for around $3 a watt, and grid parity is expected within 5 years. Q:how do solar photovoltaic panels work?
Hey E Girl, photovoltiac panels are pretty simple. They start with a solid block of silicone, and shave thin layers off of them, called wafers. Once you have about 72 of them, you take half of them and dope them with boron, then the other half are doped with phosphorous. Once that's done, they take one each phosphorous and boron wafer, and glue them together with a special conductive epoxy glue, and attach a wire to each wafer. When the two glued wafers are exposed to the sun, a reaction occurs that forces free electrons from the silicone particles from one wafer onto the other, and a voltage is generated between them, about /2 volt to be exact. Once all 36 pairs are glued together, they are wired in series, connecting the phosphourous wafer from one to the boron wafer on the next, and so on. If you start with 72 wafers, you'll have 36 pairs glued together when you are done. At /2 volt each, that makes a 8 volt panel, which is used to charge a 2 volt battery. The charging source always has to have a few more volts than the battery. These 36 pairs of cells are then arranged on some kind of back board, glued down, covered with acrylic glass and mounted in a frame. Q:Connect Power Outlet to Solar Panel?
The least expensive way would be to get a 500 W or preferably a higher rated UPS. The higher the rating, the more robust the inverter. You can get two year old ones cheap because most people don't realize that it's just a $2 battery that goes bad every two years. Get some Car batteries in parallel to build up more capacity. Deep cycle marine batteries or golf cart batteries are best. Connect the Solar Panel to the batteries via a FET diode, assuming your solar cells are wired to produce 2 V or better power (you probably would want at least 8 V), this is to charge the batteries when the sun is shining. A little bit of analog circuitry magic can create a current limiter based on a Darlington pair type layout. Connect the batteries to the rest of the UPS (don't plug it into the wall) and you can run 0 V 60 Hz AC devices off it's outlets. You may want to snip the wire going to the speaker so you won't hear the alarm. There's no way you could sync this to the grid so don't even try a grid tie in and the inverter in the UPS is only intended to run for 0 to 20 minutes so it may burn out however we've run UPS inverters constantly for months before when we needed a cheap power converter to change AC power frequencies before.

Are they saying that the panels cost $5k and the installation cost $35k? Or are they saying the panels were $50k, plus another $35k for installation, making the total $85k? Possibly the data was from several years ago. $5k buys 6 kW of panels today, larger than goes on most houses. Installation depends on local labor costs, but should not be more than about $5k in the US, unless the system is huge, or unusual, such as a standalone system on a concrete pad, instead of just on the roof. The system on our roof is roughly 3 kilowatts. If installed today, the parts would cost about $9k. After federal tax credit, $7k. Labor depends on the local situation. We installed our own, so didn't pay any labor cost.
