What exactly happens and how a mobile phone attach to the network.How it is different if the mobile is in roaming area?: A cell phone network is made up of the cell phones themselves, base stations, and the mobile switching center (MSC) hardware which does call routing, etc. The base stations (cell towers) are always broadcasting out control signals that contain a System ID (SID) and how it expects cell phones to identify themselves. When you power up a cell phone, it hears this and registers with the nearest base station and your cell phone sends its Mobile ID Number. This Mobile ID Number is more than just your cell phone number, it also contains its own system ID (SID) number, and it also contains the ESN, Electronic Serial Number that identifies that specific phone. If the base station's SID and cell phone's SID match, then the phone is on its home network. If not, then you are roaming and connect to another provider's network, usually for additional charges. Your phone usually can hear multiple cell towers but connects to the one that has the best signal (signal to noise ratio). After your phone is registered, your cell phone number plus ESN are forwarded to the MSC, which sends this to a home location register or HLR. If it turns out you're not on your home provider's network, it goes to a VLR, Visiting Location Register. This way the cellular network always knows where you are, that is, which cell you're in (what cell tower) so calls can be router to/from your cell phone.

Q: i seen a verizon phone that i had b4 just with virgin mobile. its the same exact phone just with a verizon plan so i was wondering if i could take it to a cricket phone store and have them convert it like they do with virgin mobile phones. is this possible???????: yes it is, i've done it before. it would be impossible to do that with a t-mobile phone or att since they use SIM cards, but virgin mobile, sprint, verizon, and cricket all run on CDMA. but cricket won't be able to flash it for you, some cricket stores do but non that i've been too, you'll have to look up online for stores in your location that will flash it for you. let me explain what flashing is. flashing is basically re-wiring your phones hardware to work with another service provider. there are two kinds of flashing, full flash and partial flash. FULL FLASH: this means that when your phone is fully flashed to work on crickets network, talk, text, pix, web etc will all work. PARTIAL FLASH: this means that ONLY talk and text will work some phones can be both fully and partially flashed, some phones can only be partially flashed and not fully flashed, and some phones cannot be flashed at all. it all depends on the phone, and the store you take it to. just write down the phones model and company (LG, motorola, etc) and call the store you want to go to and ask them if they can flash it. if you want it fully flashed, make sure you clearly specify that you want it FULLY flashed. fully flashing a phone will be more expensive that partially flashing. full flashes can typically go anywhere from $40 to $70 dollars. this all depends on the phone, and who you go to, to get it flashed. there are people on craigslist sometimes who can flash phones, but i would choose a business over a random dude on craigslist anyday so yes it is possible, depending on the phone
