- Q: Solar panels do good more then bad?
- Like any other materials, solar panels need to be manufactured. These components are usually imported, they use energy to produce and transport. However, once you install solar panels, they need little or no maintenance (except cleaning to maintain efficiency) and they use no other resources to produce power. Over their lifespan, they'll produce more energy than was used to be made, so on the whole good for the environment.
- Q: The first panel is located in New England, the second is placed in the Sahara desert, the third is on the Earth side of the moon, and the last is on the far side of the moon. Which panel would absorb the most sunlight over a year's time and why ? All the panels are place in optimal places where they would get the most light available.
- probly the sahara desert since it there's not much rain there which would equal few clouds. you'd get plenty of direct sunlight. the moon is constantly orbiting earth and in different possisions with the sun which would equal less sun exposure.

- Most radio's have a DC plugin port. You can build or purchase adapters that step down the 2 V power to the radio's power needs. In short, power your devices directly from the solar cell using the car adapter plugs made for them or charge a larger battery as a power resevoir and plug your car adapters into it when it is dark which allows you to charge devices when you are not using them while sleeping.
- Q: 3.8 volts is required to fully charge a battery. But at 3.8 volts, the battery can be overcharged without the use of a controller correct? What if I don't care if the battery is fully charged? In the case of our family boat, I just installed a new radio, so I'm a little worried about power consumption. So now for the real question; If I hook a 2 volt panel to the batteries, do I need to worry about overcharging them? Or will the batteries stop the charging process once they reach 2 volt?I built the panel myself, it's 8 volts at 3.5 amps open circuit. I have tabs at every 3 volt increment on the panel so that I can use less voltage than 8 if I want to power something directly, (ex:2 volt radio)So I'm using the 2 volt tab at 3.5 amps(approx) for a total of approx 48 watts
- Batteries will not stop charging on their own. The will stop charging when the battery voltage equals the supply voltage. Solar panel open circuit voltage is typically around 20V. Batteries will just boil dry before reaching 20V. One rule of thumb, above 0W you need a controller for sure.
- Q: I'm making a model of a solar photovoltaic tower for a school project. I need a way to store energy, and we thought about using capacitors (mainly because of our somewhat limited funding). The tower will have a small photovoltaic panel (around the size of a laptop keyboard with number pad) and some (around 50) quot;heliostats(just the mirrors, no moving parts). What kind of capacitors should i use? and would a capacitor bank be better? i am getting confused with all those uF, pF and can't see the difference.Thanx in advance

- I just saw an episode of Renovation nation on Planet green. They built a house is Washington State that ran on solar. It was still hooked to the grid but it was project to be a net 0 home. So if they can do it there you should be able to do it. I have also been looking at solar. Good Luck.

- Unless you live in an area with a very high UV index, like Las Vegas for example, solar panels are not cost-effective. You definatly should not attempt to install solar power yourself if you intend to power a residence with it (unless you live in a shack). A certified electrician is required in order to connect your equipment to your house's electrical system. It isnt just as simple as a few panels. You need a converter that turns the DC voltage generated into AC. You also need equipment to connect to the metering system for your house. If you want to see if it is cost effective, you will need your electric bills that show usage for a year and the price per kWH. There are a lot of websites that have calculators for solar power systems.
