85W CNBM Polycrystalline Silicon Panel for Home Using
Production description
Most solar modules are currently produced from crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells made of multicrystalline andmonocrystalline silicon. In 2013, crystalline silicon accounted for more than 90 percent of worldwide PV production, while the rest of the overall market is made up of thin-film technologies using cadmium telluride, CIGS and amorphous silicon[7]Emerging, third generation solar technologies use advanced thin-film cells. They produce a relatively high-efficiency conversion for the low cost compared to other solar technologies. Also, high-cost, high-efficiency, and close-packed rectangular multi-junction (MJ) cells are preferably used in solar panels on spacecraft, as they offer the highest ratio of generated power per kilogram lifted into space. MJ-cells are compound semiconductors and made of gallium arsenide (GaAs) and other semiconductor materials. Another emerging PV technology using MJ-cells is concentrator photovoltaics (CPV).

- Q: I am curious about how much of the energy that a solar panel of a given size and capacity will produce in it's lifetime, and what fraction of that energy was required to produce it in the first place?
- The attached link is to an article from the 200 Home Power magazine. In that article the energy payback was found to be between 2 and 4 years. Newer panels are more efficient primarily because the silicon wafers used today are thinner. The silicon cell embodies most of the energy required to make a solar panel. Today most solar panels will produce the amount of energy required to manufacture them in between about 9 months and 2 years depending upon the specific technology used to make it. Solar panels are expected to produce energy for between 30 and 50 years. Therefore it takes around 5% of their total energy production to produce them. Note that these figures depend upon where the panels are installed. Panels in very sunny areas may generate more than 3 times the energy of panels in a cloudier area. Edit - The energy payback meta-study that carbonates references below mention one particular study Alsema (2000), which the authors used as a baseline to come up with their 4 year payback figure. These studies DO NOT assume ideal conditions. The Alsema study assumes an annual an irradiation of 700 kWh/m2/yr. That is the United States average irradiation and does take into account cloudy weather and the like. Under idea conditions the amount of energy collected can be almost twice as much. Albuquerque New Mexico is an example. The figures I mentioned above are recent values reported by several different panel manufacturers with whom I discussed the issue at the 2006 IEEE 4th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion held this May. The very long payback times that carbonate highlights are almost certainly wrong. The study he references concludes that paybacks range between 2 and 8 years with 4 years being the most likely. In my opinion payback times are actually a fair bit shorter based on conversations with the manufacturers.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on wearable devices?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on wearable devices. However, due to the limited surface area available on wearables, the amount of energy generated may be relatively low compared to larger solar installations. Additionally, the efficiency of such panels may vary based on the device's orientation to the sun. Nonetheless, incorporating solar panels on wearables can contribute to extending battery life and enhancing their overall sustainability.
- Q: Can solar panels be damaged by hail or other weather conditions?
- Yes, solar panels can be damaged by hail or other severe weather conditions. Hailstones can cause cracks or dents on the surface of the panels, which can affect their efficiency or even render them inoperable. Other extreme weather conditions like high winds, heavy snow, or lightning strikes can also potentially cause damage to solar panels. However, it is important to note that modern solar panels are designed to withstand a certain level of weather-related stresses and are often tested for durability.
- Q: I've been thinking and I'd like to have solar panels installed on my roof at some point to help reduce our electricity consumption- but I live in IL and in the winter it frequently snows. Is there such a thing as heated solar panels so they don't get coated w/ice or snow? Are solar panels even a feasible option in IL? Thank you, Anna
- Absolutely you can have solar panels in IL, there Anna. I am from Rochester, NY so I am a little familiar with frequent snowfalls! Plus my In Laws have solar panels and they live just outside of Chicago. (Oak Park sounds familiar, but I cant for the life of me remember the name of their community) Check with your local building department as to what you may have to do to your existing roof, as the panels and its necessary roof bracing can be quite heavy. Add a good Lake Michigan snowfall to an already heavy roof and you could have yourself a big problem! In better news many utilities and states around the country provide financial subsidies and incentives that along with the subsidies from those from the Federal Government greatly reduce the initial cost and speed up the amount of time it takes for you to recoup your initial investment. Solar panels by their very nature are warm, as they absorb the light from the sun. The latitude for IL is such that the solar panels on your roof will be tilted so much that the only way snow can build up is if there such a snowfall on your roof that its accumulation rises above the solar panels. There is no such thing as heated solar panels and you can very easily have solar panels in climates ranging from the Carribean to Northern Canada/Alaska. If you get serious about solar energy give a company called Sun Electronics a call. I know it may sound lame but my in-laws used them for their house and have been quite happy with the outcome. My In laws (at times) are cheap and are not an easy crowd to please.....but again are very happy with their outcome! Good Luck.
- Q: What would it take to make a heater for a small solar panel. I am looking into making a heater for a livestock tank to keep ice melted. I know that heaters take alot of energy to run, but my theory is that if heated mirrors on a car can melt ice with low voltage and im sure not extreme heat (40-60 degrees) then making a heater with just high enough temperature to keep from icing over and melting ice is possible. Where do I start? I would like to use an inexpensive solar panel that will generate enough heat to keep ice from forming and melt it at the beginning of the day. How can you make such a heater and apply Ohms law so that it will function correctly, what Wattage will the pannel need to produce to generate enough heat for the heater. The device will only have to be large enough to melt a spot large enough for an animal to drink.
- Short answer is yes. Good to start out a large tank, or big rock to mount your collectors on. Something the stock won't eat or push over. I would start with a swimming pool solar collector. It is just a big piece of black plastic aimed at the winter sun. A collector with insulation and covers will give more heat per sq foot and cost more. Big mirrors and a black painted stock tank might be enough. Insulation of the tank might help a lot. Is the water liquid when pumped up the tank? Do you truck the water in? Is there any electric power wired there or near by? Electric solar collectors can pump and heat water and charge batteries, but it is also possible to circulate water using a thermosyphon set up. You don't have to use photocells. If it gets cold enough some collectors can freeze solid and damage themselves. There are collectors that contain two loops one water the other antifreeze.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed in areas prone to hurricanes or tornadoes?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed in areas prone to hurricanes or tornadoes. However, it is important to design and install the solar panel system with the specific weather conditions in mind. This includes using appropriate mounting systems, ensuring proper anchoring and reinforcement of the panels, and using high-quality materials that can withstand strong winds. Additionally, regular maintenance and inspections should be conducted to ensure the panels remain in optimal condition.
- Q: I don't remember what number exactly but it's in the single digits. This number represents how efficient solar panels are at capturing the sun's rays and converting it into electricity. Why?
- The most important thing is for how much time the sun shines at your place. If you are living at a place where the sun shines just for to 2 hours then installing a solar panel will be of no use. But if sun shines at least 9-0 hours then solar panels will be in use.
- Q: Im doing this project on Solar panels and im not so sure what they are!some questions i have are who invented them and what were they invented? If u could know anything on Solar Panels i would love to hear it. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Solar Power. There is no denying it, solar power works. Not only is it energy efficient, it is also safe and extremely clean. Whether it may be for a home, business or a community, there are no limits to the energy that the best solar panels are able to offer. It is a guarantee that once this medium is applied, you would easily slash your greenhouse gas emissions and electricity bill.
- Q: I was thinking about getting some GE Solar Panels and on there website that I am on, I didn't really see a price. can anybody give me maybe an estimate on how much each one would cost? thanks
- I wasn't aware that GE made solar panels. Perhaps they sold their name to someone, as they've done for all of their consumer electronics. But a 90-watt panel is $66.20 from the place below.
- Q: Is this true in a dc system? What if my battery current is negative?
- Current rating of a piece of supply equipment is the maximum current that can be supplied. you may have the capacity to supply 8.75 amps total but your load may draw a lot less than that. like if you fill your cup from a bottle. the bottle may hold 5 gallons but you only use one quarter of a pint to fill the cup. I hope that makes some kind of sense.
