Q:I need to repair my shower, about 6 tiles fell off. I‘m currently drying the drywall with a fan. Whats the best way to glue tile back on the wall?: First of all I would look at the wall behind where the tile has came off. If your house is old or installation was poor they may not have the proper material behind the tile, as in the wall. If it is sheetrock, no wonder! You need either greenboard or dur-rock behind it that is the code. Anyways, once you find this out see if it's only sheetrock behind it, it won't do you any good to stick em back up. Which if the material behind is fine than just get some match stick at home depot that's cheap but creates a nasty mess. Or grab a small bag of thinset which you mix with water or some will require an extra additive which will be where ever you go for the thin set. You can get this stuff at Home Depot or Lowes while your there I 'd grab a trowel with 3/8 knotch spacers and your grout. Hopefully all of the peices were full peices. If not your gonna have to borrow a hand held maquita or cutter or saw. Make sure your rows with trowel are even with through out your spread. If you are using thinset, you have to apply thinset to wall and tile. Obviously you stick the tile first grab some sort of extra scrap to spread them appropriately. Wait a day for the thinset to set up and the next day pull out your wedges or spacers and grout. Good luck. Chic

Q:i have a tile back splash that runs all along my counter including behind my sink and behind my stove. it is a small 1 tile, and i‘m pretty sure it‘s original to the house (40‘s) so it‘s getting kinda grimy. no matter what i do to clean it, it‘s so tough, because of kitchen grease and splatter. the grout isn‘t sealed so it absorbs stains. i keep seeing people say sprinkle baking soda on tile, let it sit, and then clean with vinegar, which would be great if this was a floor, but its a wall, so if there are any solutions, that would be great. natural preferred. i really don‘t want to replace this. painting it is an option, so suggestions on paint for tile would be appreciated as well.: DAWN dish detergent.....THE BEST cleaner in the world.........if it's a tough stain, add a bit of toothpaste or baking soda. Dawn is the best!

Q:Over time the tiles in my apartment bathtub have turned yellow. It‘s not all of the tiles, just a few in the back/corner. I undoubtedly have hard water but I can‘t figure out why a few of these tiles are yellow. As far as I can tell, these are cheap plastic tiles (white). I have tried comet (with bleach), full strength bleach, vinegar/water solution, vinegar/baking soda, baking soda by itself, mr. clean magic eraser, and full strength CLR to no avail. The only thing that worked at all was using comet and scouring the tiles with steel wool. Although it scratched the surface, the actual scratch part wasn‘t noticeable. But there has to be an easier way than breaking my arm to get one tile cleaned. Any suggestions? If anyone wants I can email them a picture of the tiles.: Anything you've used that has already scratched the tiles will only result in hard water deposits clinging to them again, as the glaze has been compromised. CLR full strength is really the only thing that works that won't damage the tiles although it requires repeated treatments to clean them. Take an extra fine media abrasive (0000), mix a 50/50 solution of a product called Barkeeper's Friend and CLR and try this. You may have to treat it several times but the hard water scale should dissolve without damaging the tiles. I've heard of mixing a solution of scratchless cleaning powder and kerosene, but you don't want to apply that to plastic and you don't want to use VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) in confined spaces. A better solution would be to break out all the plastic tile and have it replaced with ceramics, but since you're renting and your landlord probably doesn't want to spend money on remodeling this is your best bet.

Q:Can you Spackle over ceiling tile and then paint it, or do you have to rip all the tiles out and Sheetrock the ceiling to have a seamless ceiling?: Not sure what type of tiles these are, but I'll guess this is a hung ceiling, with the metal strips holding up lightweight acoustic ceiling tile. If this is the case, spackle (used to fill holes in walls, etc.) is not an option. In theory, someone could mud the suspended ceiling, and it could possibly come out relatively smooth. However, hung ceilings are not made for this, and I doubt an amateur could pull it off with any degree of success. What's above the tiles? A real ceiling? If so, your best bet is to remove the hung ceiling, and either fix up the real ceiling above, or put a real ceiling up.

Q:my bathtub tile peice just fell out and i am wondering what material i should use with it to put it back into place. Any ideas?: Yes!! Scrape as much of the old glue away from the wall since anything you add will make the tile stick out farther than it did before. Next let it dry if its wet. Than apply some loctite adhesive to the back of the tile. Push the tile in until it is flush with the other tile. About four good size lines of glue will do it. Around the edges and then 4 vertical lines. This will allow the glue to expand and not hold the tile out. Wipe off any extra glue now . It hard to get off later. Let dry over night and than buy a matching grout to finish the job, Follow the instruction on the box. Good luck

Q:the kitchen is pretty spacious, but is it possible to put tiles on top of wood?: I had the same cocern when I was remodeling my kitchen. I had a linoleum floor and wanted to change to tiles. I ripped out my old linoleum floor only because I wanted to keep the increase of the new flooring to a min. Everybody I taked to suggested to use backerboard over your sub floor if you want your new floor to last. Use 1/4 if you subfloor is relativley stable, 1/2 backerboard if not. But remember the difference in height of your new floor with the thickness of the backer board and tiles.
