It's hard to tell their genre. Every song sounds different from the others. Avenged Sevenfold (A7X)'s early works is mainly metalcore/hardcore I think. But I cannot tell their later works is heavy metal as you said. Ever listened to A little piece of heaven? It includes elements of Broadway show tunes, using primarily brass instruments and stringed orchestra to take over most of the role of the lead and rhythm guitar. And Dear God adopts a country style. M Shadows' voice is getting better. Warmness on the soul and Dear God sound like 2 different singers. And their guitar works are damn good due to their double-threat guitarist Syn and Zacky. I am not any rock band fans but I can tell that this is a cool band and these guys knows how to play good music. If you like their sound, then go for their albums. It does not matter which genre they play.

Personally, My fave is Bodies by Drowning Pool, there's also Slipknot, Serj Tankian, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails, and def some Metallica (mainly older stuff, but you might like the newer stuff too). Just find some older CDs at Co-op or some other store like that, where you can buy them used instead of spending too much green on something you don't like.

I think it all depends on your opinion. It's got alot of the stuff true metal has, just with other elements mixed in. It's nice to have variety. Really, though, the only nu metal band I enjoy is SOAD, not much for Linkin Park, Korn, Disturbed, etc. I'm not going to go around calling someone a poser just 'cause they like it and I don't care much for a genre. Besides, if I did that, I'd be calling some of the people closest to me, including my boyfriend, posers. Such blasphemy.

A music that is typically played at a fast tempo with distorted guitars, long guitar solos and with a loud bass presence. Lyrics are typically about violence, sex or the occult. Just about all of it is metal, technically. We just wanna make a distinction between what metal fans actually listen to, and the teen pop bullshlt metal. There does not exist those metal fans you're talking about, who think singing doesn't belong in metal, they're all trolls, I never met a person in the real world who thought that way. Nobody says power metal isn't metal, nobody says symphonic metal isn't metal, long standing genre's like these have earned their place.

The main difference is that metal tracks typically contain loud, distorted guitars, with a song structure of Intro-->Verse-->Refrain(Repeat verse and refrain over and over)-->Solo-->Verse-->Refrain-->Outro. Hope this helps :)
