Well they're more of a tamer Metal band... their sound isn't as heavy as other Metal bands, but I would say that there's a very thin line between hard rock and heavy metal.

Viking metal is a sub-genre of Black metal, and people already talked about the lyrics. But I just wanted to point out that, yes, Amon Amarth (my favorite band if I must add) does sing about vikings and has lyrics about Norse paganism and mythology, but I though I would just state that even the band members don't consider themselves viking metal. So in my opinion, I just call them Melodic Death metal, but everyone has different opinions.

Extracting a metal from a metal oxide IS reduction. Why? When it's part of an oxide, the metal has a charge (a metal oxide is an ionic compound). For instance, in MgO, Mg has a +2 charge and O has a -2 charge. In Al2O3, Al has a +3 charge and O is again -2. When the metal is extracted, it has NO charge. So if you extract Mg from MgO, Mg goes from a +2 charge to a 0 charge by gaining electrons ... that's reduction. At the same time, oxygen goes from a -2 to a 0 (the element O2 is formed) by giving up 2 electrons ... that's oxidation. In removing Al from Al2O3, Al goes from a +3 charge to a 0 charge. Again, that's reduction. Oxygen is again oxidized.

If melodic death metal is what you're talking about then: Amon Amarth, At the Gates, Carcass, Children of Bodom, and In Flames could all be considered melodic death metal (to name a few of the most well known). Also Dethklok from Metalocalypse. :)

None of those bands listed are heavy metal; they're more like hardcore / deathcore. If you want to listen to Death Metal, you should try Decapitated, Morbid Angel, Death, Sinister, Grave, Behemoth (new), Hypocrisy, Obituary, to name a few......

So honestly, listening to metal comes naturally and some even start as little kids, listening to rock, i have been listening to rock since... As long as I remember. My dad would play a lot of: led zeppelin, system of a down, and more. Ok. Just like that other guy said, u can start off with old metal, I really like: system of a down, and metallica. And not counting from when the band started, i really loooove: my chemical romance, pierce the veil, sleeping with sirens, bring me the horizon, black veil brides, suicide silence, (they r not really metal but THEY R AWESOME- that bands name is called, Paramore. So i really listen to these bands, the most. Give a listen to some of these. Try it. If u want something a little softer, try paramore. Sorry thats all i could think of right now. I mostly listen to metal. Ok. Yea ur welcome :) XD
