What is aluminum?

Aluminium is oxidized by water at temperatures below 280°C to produce hydrogen, aluminium hydroxide and heat:2 Al + 6 H2O → 2 Al(OH)3 + 3 H2

This conversion is of interest for the production of hydrogen. Challenges include circumventing the formed oxide layer, which inhibits the reaction and the expenses associated with the storage of energy by regeneration of the Al metal.

Aluminium is theoretically 100% recyclable without any loss of its natural qualities. According to the International Resource Panel's Metal Stocks in Society report, the global per capita stock of aluminium in use in society (i.e. in cars, buildings, electronics etc.) is 80 kg (180 lb). Much of this is in more-developed countries (350–500 kg (770–1,100 lb) per capita) rather than less-developed countries (35 kg (77 lb) per capita). Knowing the per capita stocks and their approximate lifespans is important for planning recycling.

Q:aluminum is used to make planes, cast iron is used to make heavy mashines. what is the comparisonof teh densities of aluminum and cast iron?
The density of aluminum is MUCH lower than cast iron (thus, aluminum is LIGHTER). Because it is lighter, it would be much more ideal for applications like plane building, which is why aluminum is used over cast iron in airplanes. As well, aluminum has a protective coating called aluminum oxide which protects it from corroding in water. [Answer: see above]
Q:what were the cinergy field (riverfront stadium, cincinnati, oh) seats made of? were they metal or aluminum? i know they were silver under the red paint...
The stadium opened in 1970, so that would be aluminum.
Q:Can aluminum sheets be perforated for decorative or functional purposes?
Yes, aluminum sheets can be perforated for both decorative and functional purposes. Perforating aluminum sheets involves creating a pattern of holes or perforations in the metal surface. These perforations can serve various purposes depending on the specific application. For decorative purposes, perforated aluminum sheets are commonly used in architecture and interior design. The patterns of holes can add visual interest and create unique designs, allowing for the play of light and shadow. It can be used for decorative screens, partitions, facades, and ceiling panels, among other applications. Perforated aluminum sheets offer versatility in design, as different hole sizes, shapes, and arrangements can be used to achieve the desired aesthetic effect. In terms of functional purposes, perforated aluminum sheets provide several advantages. Firstly, they can improve airflow and ventilation in applications such as HVAC systems, air-conditioning units, and speaker grilles. The perforations allow air to pass through while still maintaining the structural integrity of the sheet. Secondly, perforated aluminum sheets can be used for sound absorption and noise reduction. The holes in the sheet disrupt sound waves, reducing noise levels in areas such as auditoriums, concert halls, and industrial facilities. Additionally, perforated aluminum sheets have practical applications in filtration and separation processes. They can be used as screens or sieves to separate particles of different sizes, allowing for the filtration of liquids or gases. These sheets are also used in the manufacturing of various industrial equipment, such as vibrating screens, grain dryers, and centrifuges. In summary, aluminum sheets can indeed be perforated for both decorative and functional purposes. Whether it is to enhance the visual appeal of a space, improve airflow, reduce noise levels, or aid in filtration processes, perforated aluminum sheets offer a versatile solution for a wide range of applications.
Q:I have a specific design I'd like to cut out of thin sheet metal (aluminum or tin) and I'm wondering how to make it more sturdy. The sheet metal is a bit flimsy. Can I strengthen it by heating it up (butane torch) and cooling it quickly?
No. In fact, aluminum (and I believe tin) work harden when hammered - as do brass and copper and you heat to anneal and then you can cool fast or slow, still soft. Tin has a very low melting point and hitting it with a torch, especially if thin, will probably put a hole in it. The chances of you actually having tin sheet metal are very low - tin cans are zinc plated steel or some other coating. Steel does harden when quench, but heating tin or zinc coated metal is likely to damage the coating and perhaps give off noxious fumes - especially zinc.
Q:Can aluminum sheets be used for cryogenic applications?
Aluminum sheets are indeed applicable for cryogenic purposes. Their suitability arises from their commendable thermal conductivity and low density. These qualities enable them to endure exceedingly low temperatures without succumbing to brittleness or compromising their mechanical attributes. Furthermore, aluminum exhibits non-magnetic properties and exceptional resistance to corrosion, rendering it highly significant in cryogenic applications. Nevertheless, it is crucial to meticulously choose the appropriate alloy and thickness of the aluminum sheet, considering the precise cryogenic temperature and intended use, to guarantee optimal performance.
Q:Can aluminum sheets be coated with other materials?
Aluminum sheets have the capability to undergo a process called aluminum sheet coating or aluminum sheet finishing, wherein they are coated with different materials. This coating process serves several purposes, such as enhancing their appearance, protecting against corrosion, increasing durability, and providing insulation. Painting, anodizing, laminating, and powder coating are among the various methods available to coat aluminum sheets. Each method offers unique advantages and is selected based on the desired outcome and intended usage of the coated aluminum sheet. Coating aluminum sheets with other materials allows for customization, versatility, and enhanced functionality in a wide range of industries, including construction, automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods.
Q:Can aluminum sheets be used for solar panel frames?
Solar panel frames can indeed be made from aluminum. The reason behind aluminum's popularity as a material for solar panel frames lies in its remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, resistance to corrosion, and durability. These qualities render it suitable for the task of supporting and safeguarding solar panels, which are often installed in outdoor settings. By providing structural stability, aluminum frames guarantee the longevity of solar panels by shielding them from elements like wind, rain, and snow. Moreover, aluminum is readily recyclable, making it an environmentally-conscious option for solar panel frames.
Q:How does the price of 101 aluminum sheets compare to other aluminum alloys?
The price of 101 aluminum sheets is typically lower compared to other aluminum alloys.
