Q:have been taking an over the counter Antacid consistently for the past 8 years as a daily source of extra calcium per the bottle. Now, I am getting many nerve problems, similar to Lou Gehrig's disease. I am a healthy 38 year old male who excersises, eats right and is generally health conscious. I am concerned that unknowingly I have toxified my body with the aluminum that apparently is in Antacid. I did not know this until now or of course I would not have gone any where near it.Can taking Antacid lead to nerve problems such as Lou Gehrig's disease?

Q:Can anyone tell me what to be careful of if you have aluminum wiring in your house. I was told that if the wall gets hot, I need to tighten the screws of the inside switch. Is this true and if I didn't, would it actually cause a fire in the wall. If this is true, how often does it loosen?
Aluminum wiring contracts and expands more than copper wiring of similar size. This means that it has a tendancy to loosen the screws on the outlets over time. As the screws loosen, the resistance in the circuit goes up - this resistance manifests itself as heat. If it gets too hot, it can start fires. My parents owned a house with aluminum wiring, that they sold to me. In the 35 years total we've owned it, I think we've tightened the screws on the outlets three times total. Only once in all that time have we had a wall get hot. The most recent tightening was during a major repainting where we actually replaced the outlets and switches with decorator ones as we painted each room.
Q:Can aluminum sheet be welded?
Indeed, welding aluminum sheet is feasible. Aluminum, a versatile metal, lends itself well to welding through the utilization of diverse techniques like gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and resistance spot welding (RSW). Nevertheless, the welding of aluminum necessitates specific considerations due to its elevated thermal conductivity and low melting point when compared to other metals. Consequently, selecting the suitable welding process, filler material, and shielding gas is crucial to ensuring a successful weld. Moreover, proper surface preparation, including thorough cleaning and the removal of any oxide layer, plays a pivotal role in achieving a robust and long-lasting weld in aluminum sheet.
Q:How does aluminum sheet perform in corrosive environments?
Due to its intrinsic ability to resist corrosion, aluminum sheet is highly effective in corrosive environments. It forms a thin oxide layer on its surface, which acts as a protective barrier against further corrosion. This layer, known as aluminum oxide, remains stable and shields the underlying metal from moisture, chemicals, and other corrosive elements. In environments commonly prone to corrosion, such as air, water, and mild acids, aluminum sheet demonstrates a high level of resistance and maintains its integrity for long periods. Unlike metals like iron or steel, aluminum does not rust or corrode. Therefore, it is an ideal choice for applications exposed to moisture or harsh atmospheric conditions. However, aluminum can be vulnerable to corrosion in aggressive environments, such as highly acidic or alkaline solutions. In these situations, the protective oxide layer may dissolve, resulting in localized corrosion referred to as pitting. To address this concern, aluminum can be alloyed with other elements like magnesium or zinc to enhance its resistance to corrosion. Overall, aluminum sheet is widely acknowledged for its exceptional performance in corrosive environments, making it a preferred material in various industries such as marine, construction, automotive, and aerospace. Its lightweight nature, combined with its corrosion resistance, makes aluminum an appealing option in environments where durability and longevity are crucial.
Q:What is the price range of aluminum sheets?
The price range of aluminum sheets can vary depending on factors such as size, thickness, and quality. However, generally speaking, aluminum sheets can range in price from $1 to $5 per square foot.
Q:What is the typical creep resistance of aluminum sheets?
The typical creep resistance of aluminum sheets varies depending on the specific alloy and temper. Aluminum alloys typically have good creep resistance compared to other metals, especially at lower temperatures. However, the creep resistance of aluminum decreases significantly at higher temperatures. Aluminum sheets with higher alloying elements like copper, magnesium, or zinc tend to have better creep resistance than pure aluminum. Additionally, heat treatment processes such as cold rolling, annealing, or precipitation hardening can enhance the creep resistance of aluminum sheets. In general, aluminum sheets are known for their relatively low creep rates, making them suitable for various applications that require good dimensional stability over extended periods. However, it is important to note that the exact creep resistance of aluminum sheets can vary depending on the specific composition, processing, and operating conditions. Therefore, it is advisable to consult material specifications or conduct specific tests to determine the creep resistance of a particular aluminum sheet.
Q:on the metal activity series, aluminum sits between magnesium and zinc, and all three sit above hydrogen. Explain why aluminum typically reacts only slowly with dilute acids even though both magnesium and zinc react rapidly
Aluminum metal reacts with oxygen in the air to form a very tightly bonded aluminum oxide on its surface which slows the attack of acids trying to make contact with the aluminum atoms below the surface.
Q:My new home has a mix of copper and aluminum wiring. My mother used a shop vac in one of the recepticles last week and blew two of them in my bedroom. Then this weekend my brother was replacing my exhaust fan in the bathroom and that proceeded to blow the entire bedroom and bathroom including ceiling fans, lights and all recepticles. Does anyone have any ideas?
Home Depot sells quality aluminium receptacles. Not doubting your father totally but an electrician needs to check the inside of the panel. A number of things can go and the breaker wont be effected. If the problem is not within the panel an electrician can trace the dead circuits and isolate the problems. Hopefully your new but old home does not have any concealed electrical boxes. Sometimes in older homes the previous owner may have added some electrical items and any Joe could have did it. Believe me I've seen a lot in my 15 years of practice.
Q:Can 101 aluminum sheets be anodized for medical equipment applications?
Yes, 101 aluminum sheets can be anodized for medical equipment applications. Anodizing is a process that creates a protective layer on the surface of aluminum, enhancing its corrosion resistance, durability, and aesthetic appearance. It is commonly used in the medical industry to improve the performance and longevity of equipment, as well as to maintain cleanliness and sterility. The specific alloy of aluminum used, such as 101, does not typically impact the anodizing process, as anodizing can be applied to various grades of aluminum. However, it is important to consult with an anodizing specialist or manufacturer to ensure that the specific alloy is suitable for the intended medical equipment application and to determine the most suitable anodizing process and specifications.
Q:I just built a stone wall with illuminated glass features embedded, and to make them shine evenly, I had all sides but the visual one wrapped in industrial thickness aluminium foil. One week later, the foil has disintegrated. I have used type 10 Portland. What is going on?
I believe your problem is that concrete acts as a fairly strong base (this is especially true of mortar mixes). It is well known that strong base will react with an active metal like aluminium and produce hydrogen gas as a byproduct. The representative reaction is: 2Al+6NaOH==2Na3AlO3+3H2, This reaction is fairly rapid and can even cause an explosive buildup of hydrogen gas in a non-ventillated area.
