Q:doc said I am iron deficient. what are some foods I can eat that are high in iron? what did this come from? I have been lightheaded, nauseous, and very sleepy. Is this from the lack of iron?
Some of it might be. You can buy iron supplements in just about any grocery or drug store. Red meat, raisins and some nuts are high in iron. Also, watch your caffeine intake. Caffeine destroys both iron and calcium in the blood. I found that out the hard way when I tried to donate blood.
Q:Normally I have never enjoyed chewing or eating ice but as of the past week or two all I can think about is chewing and eating ice. About a month ago I did give blood. But other then that I have no other idea of why I might be iron deficient because normally I have high levels of iron. And doesn‘t chewing ice suddenly mean I have become iron deficient? Q:Ok, SO I have a 75 year old grandpa who has been diagnosed with Iron deficiency, he is getting REAL sick from the iron treatments they have tried to give him, I tried and could not find any cases of body rejecting the iron wich is what the Doc saidI did tho find that Iron OVERDOSE causes sickness which seem very close to what he experiences, and he only feels worse when they try to force Iron in him, wich is making me really wonder. Iron deficency test: Go to the mirror and pull your lower eyelid and see if the color is red or flesh color. If its flesh colored you are lacking enough iron and should take a herbal iron like Floradix. It will take a month to see a difference. Iron carrys oxygen in your blood and if you dont have it you will feel tired, cold hands and feet, headaches, RLS, dull brittle hair, brittle nails, poor sleep, pale skin (see thru), shortness of breath, fatigue, poor concentration, low mood, ringing in the ears, irregular heart beats, cracks in the corner of the mouth, dizziness, fainting, sore tongue and canker sores. Add b12 and folic acid for best results. They are giving him iron that is congesting his liver which is why he is feeling sick. Have him switch to a natural iron like floradix and also have him drink a small glass of real orange juice before each meal to help with absorbtion from his food. Floradix comes in liquid or small pills. Yes it is the drs mistake, they should be paying attention to his liver and his pain.which is caused by a congested liver and they know it.
Q:Ok so, to my knowledge, plants contain non-heme iron, which is hard for the body to absorb. However, vit c helps with the absorption (some say, the combination makes for even better absorption than heme iron) so I was thinking about kale because its a major part a my daily diet, and I thought great, it has both vit c and iron!.until I later read that calcium (which kale is loaded with) can interfere with the absorption of non-heme iron so would the calcium void the benefits from the vit c/iron combo?
According to the AJCN, it does. They recommend you wait two hours after eating an iron rich meal to eat a high calcium food. See link. Good catch on your part, BTW. That's something most of us never think about.
