- Q: We recently purchased a condo with an unfinished walkout basement. Two walls above grade have fiberglass batts with a plastic vapor barrier. The ceiling has exposed fiberglass batts. We have no immediate plans to finish the basement, but I will have a washer and dryer down there. There is an electric blower to keep the pipes from freezing, but no other source of heat. - Short of a dropped ceiling, you might try stapling kraft paper or the such over the fiberglass. Lets the insulation breathe, but covers it up.
- Q: I recently installed speakers in my ceiling for my entertainment center, they sound fine but you can hear them through the floor upstairs. does anyone know what i can do?
- You can reduce some of the sound transmission by putting some absorbent material above the speaker (e.g. heavy weight fiberglass insulation), but if there is much bass the only really effective way to sound proofing is using something like green glue or RSIC clips to acoustically isolate the speaker from the floor above. See the links. You would need to construct a sealed (from above) drywall/gypsumboard box. See the two websites for further info. Note that the whole ceiling will be acting as a membrane and because it is coupled to the floor above don't expect miracles. The real solution is to retrofit the whole ceiling ... but I doubt you want to get into that!

- Q: Hi,The felt (or whatever it is made of) ceiling in my car is falling down. I have scraped most of the residual glue off the ceiling made out of fiberglass and what I can off of the carpet/felt part. I've tried a couple of different types of two sided tape and can't get it to stick. Does anyone have any ideas?Thanks in advance...
- There is a headliner repair spray available at auto parts store. You spray it on the ceiling and the material your are trying to reattach, let it tack up, and then press into place. Works ok unless there is too much residual insulation on the ceiling.

- if you mean the bumpy stuff that is texture, (or maybe older ceiling tiles) then it's 'asbestos'.... the only way to be sure is to have the paint and texture tested.... look up 'asbestos removal' in the phone book, call them and ask where to have test done.... if you have it, it's a stinker to be rid of..... we have it and have decided to use the thinest sheetrock and hang it over the old ceiling rather than remove the 'popcorn' texture...
- Q: We have removed our rough sawn cedar from our cathedral ceiling in our 80's home. We found fiberglass insulation and 2x6 joists (the roof is directly above). The first electrician came out before we removed the ceiling and assumed there was no insulation and said we needed to get spray insulation because of the condensation can lights can cause. Would it help to put some foam board between the shallow housings and the roofing substrate (if it fits)? We are only planning on putting up 6 6" lights in a 10x20 room...
