Q:I have a cabin in the woods and need more light. I do have enough sun but I was wondering how or where do I get a solar panel to lead to a power outlet? In a perfect world I would like to get a solar panel with a connecting wire to an outlet or something so I could power a small TV. I know its hard enough but can I get that pre-made? Or even lastly should I look at wind power consider I would like this to be under $500? Thank you for putting up with this bundle of questions.
Wow. I couldn't tell you how much something like that would cost, but I would expect it to be pretty high. I don't think you are going to find a panel out there that is going to pump out enough juice to provide 0ac. It would involve a battery system and a DC to AC power inverter. You would have to let the system charge for a time and then you would be able to use if for a little while.
Q:when we say a solar panel has 20% efficiency, do we mean that it converts 20% of sunlight reaching it into electricity or that it converts 20% of visible light(which is only 7% of sunlight) into electricity?
Photo-voltaic solar cells use the visible light range (photons) for the conversion of sun's rays to electrical energy. The potential of solar radiation is ,353 Watts per square meter, but that is mostly a measure of heat, or infrared radiation. The visible light is actually a small portion of the spectrum. You have struck on a problem associated with photo-voltaic cells. Infrared radiation acts to heat up p-v cells (heat stress), causing them to be much less efficient. It would be interesting to see a hybrid p-v panel that is cooled with fluid or air running through it. This would increase efficiency of the p-v process while providing a heating source. This in turn could be used directly for heating or for production of electricity through a generator system.

most of the listings are there to get you to send 'em money. some promise a refund if they don't work. good luck getting your money back. it's not going to happen. last, the inverter, and control to feed power back into the grid are expensive. the utility gets to control what you can use, and most often you have to buy it from them. in Calif, the utility has an interest in good solar installations. they provide power during the time of peak demand, so the utility does not have to build/buy the last, most expensive kilowatt. however, (A) any installation that will be at all useful is large, and expensive, and (B) as with all electronics, next year will be better. i'll probably do it. but not yet.

Solar panels can be worth it but it is more complex issue than that. It will always be more efficient to add insulation, change to high efficiency lights, more efficient appliances, etc, first to try and save energy. However, if you have done all of that and you have a south facing area whee they could be mounted and you live in an area with a decent amount of sun, then they could pay off. I have no experience myself with Solar City, but I know from word of mouth they are good. I can recommend from first hand experience REC Solar. I have 20 of their panels on my south facing roof. They have a leasing deal or a deal where you buy the system outright (which is what I did) but for less than you might think. I'd be glad to help you if you had any other questions.

Q:I know the basics of how solar panels work. Solar panels convert sunlight into DC electricity which is stored in batteries which would need to be run through an inverter to convert it to household AC. But is there a way for the appliances to use the solar panels electricity FIRST and any additional power from the grid? Is that how it works or do they only run specific devices(water heater, pool pump, etc)?
The batteries are inefficient and expensive. Lead acid batteries are 95% efficient at discharging but only 50% efficient at charging so you need double your power consumption in solar panels for a battery based system. The big breakthrough was in grid tied inverters, these can be connected to the grid and synchronizes it's frequency to the grid thereby selling the solar power to the grid. The house electric system remains on the grid so you buy back the power when you need it effectively turning the grid into a 00% efficient battery by accounting. This saves you the cost of the batteries and the inefficiencies of the batteries halving the number of panels that you need. Grid tied solar can be a third the price of a comparable battery based system. The utilities will usually still have a service fee and may have limitations such as you can only sell the amount of power that you use and the sale can only be credits versus future energy purchases. There will also be the inefficiencies of the grid tied inverter but it would be at full load which is when it is the most efficient often 95% whereas the partial load use of a battery based system operates the inverter at an average of 65% efficiency which is why DC appliances are highly recommended for a battery based system.
