- Sure! Go for it. What color is the carpet and how high/low is the pile? It helps when the carpet is low pile and neutral. But if it isn't, the more you can cover it with a large rug the better. But consider what oneman says as well.

I have two toddlers and they are spilling food or drinks in there rooms. Its a white foam that comes out grab a damp cloth a scrub comes right up. I used to work at a dry cleaners and was always told that you should never apply water to a surface to get a stain out first without treating it with a chemical first it makes the stain set in and may not come out, don't know if this is true or not haven't done it. If it's really bad, tell your landlord he has to replace the carpeting because it's making you sick from the smell. And that's what burns me up about some stupid cat owners. - Rag Rugs are usually pretty durable, so take it to your local laundromat that has a large capacity washer (some are double loads and some even have quadruple load washers) and throw it in with some regular laundry detergent on cold. I would spin it as dry as you can in the machine and then take it home and let it air dry. It could shrink if you throw it in the dryer. It should wash up very well.

- Depends where you want to put the carpet and wood. Actually flooring is all the same temp its just that carpet does feel warmer. Thats why well placed area rugs work out so well on wood. If this house is a long term investment, go hardwood. Properly maintained, it ll last a lifetime. As far as pricing goes, 0n the average ,carpet is overall cheaper than hardwood. - Q:Can you lay new carpet over old carpet. Because of my age and health it is not possible for me to rip out the old; but I would like to lay down some new to freshen up my computer room.
- Loose-laying new carpet over old carpet could cause several problems. First, the carpet could shift if it's just laid in over the old carpet and not secured down by stretching it over tackstrip. Also, having carpet pad and two layers of carpet laid on top of each other will increase the height of your floor substantially, which may cause you to have problems opening and closing doors into that room. It will also make the flooring in that room noticeably higher than that in the surrounding rooms. Finally, you stated in your question that due to age and health reasons you can't rip out the old carpet. If you're unable to rip out the old installation, I doubt that installing new carpet would be a good idea, since even a single room's worth of carpeting is very heavy, and installing it, even as loose-lay over existing flooring would require moving all of the furniture out of the room. If you're going to go that far, you should probably just hire someone to rip out the old carpet, install the new, and do it properly.
