Q:Ok so me my bf moved in together last may and have had about a 115-138 dollar power bill every following month. All of a sudden the past 2 months our bill came in at $200 bux! Iam so frustrated bc I always keep stuff turned OFF lights TV's ect. When they aren't being used..Constantly goen behind him turning crap OFF!BTW (Annoying) Decembers bill came in at 206+late fee!? I thought wow ok it is cold outside lately maybe its the heater? Then this months came in at $238 iam astonished dnt know how 2 pay it! So i put plastic from an old shower curtain up over windows even though i was told use plastic painters would use:) all i had was shower curtain! Will this even drasticly help reduce bill!? Could it also be that our hot water pipes aren't covered? Idk if they are or not but can find out really quick! Plz any real helpful answers will be much appreciated!: Whatever plastic you put over windows will do no good at all unless it's completely sealed along all the edges and creates an air space between the window and the plastic. You didn't say if you did that or not. It will, in any case, not make a huge difference in your bill to put plastic on the windows even if it is totally sealed and done properly. Some difference, sure, but not a lot. Yes, it's the heat that is making those huge power bills. Lights and TV don't use that much. Heating and cooling are what really cost you. I don't know how cold it is where you are, but it's not all that cold where I am, a few degrees below zero at night is the coldest we get around here. I have electric heat and electric everything else. My normal summer electric bill is about $30 a month. The bill I am about to pay is going to be $150 a month. That's for just me living here, I don't usually keep the place more than about 63F, I'm very conservative with power use, and we pay relatively low power rates here. Your large bill doesn't look too bad from my point of view. You're paying a lot less per person for December/January than I am. I don't know what temp you heat your house to. If it's more than 65f, turn it down and wear some extra clothes.

Q:i have 2 windows that are always wet in the winter. will putting plastic insulation over them help this problem?: well, no not at all. The only thing we use plastic over windows for is trying to prevent drifts in the winter.

Q:will any type of plastic work for insulating windows?: Yes, but some are better than others. Anything that is strong enough that it won't tear will stop air from coming in. The plastic has no insulating value, or almost none. The value is that it traps air and thus resists heat flow. I prefer a crystal clear plastic because it looks better.

Q:My windows seem to be extra drafty this year... It seems like one of them is open, but I can't find anything wrong with them. Anyhow, my heat is kicking on like every 15 minutes! You just put them where the window hits the sill when it closes. If it doesn't help you can always add on the plastic. Also put insulating foam in your outlets and switch plates that are on an outside wall. These are dirt cheap and cut to fit right in the outlet.

Q:well i have a 1992 alfa romeo spider and some idiots sliced the back of the convertible on my plastic window. i was wondering how much it would cost if i send it to a shop and they sew off the old plastic window and sew back on a new plastic window: they can do it --they have to remove the top-remove the stitching from old window and remove window-sew in window- replace top on car--this is NOT cheap but still cheaper than new top=--look for about 400 buck charge--shop all the auto upholstery shops in your area first--talk to your friends -talk to people in auto industry that have used any shops--you are naturally looking for someone that can do the job and do it efficiently and correctly- and at the lowest price==most shops operate on the cheap,good,fast idea--you can have any 2 of these statements--cheap and good not fast--you get the idea

Are there any adhesives or techniques to fix it?: Unfortunately, any repair will be only temporary, and you will never be able to do an unnoticeable repair. Some very good clear packaging tape on either side applied on a warm sunny day, perhaps even followed by some mild heat from a hair drier.

Q:they are white and look dingy: I have found using a product called Mean Green does a lovely job on the new vinyl windows. I use it on mine and found it great. I smoke and the place we live leaves road crud on them on the outside. This handles it great. Any good department store carries it, spray it on use warm water to wash off and rinse. Good to go.

I remember my dad did this to our windows growing up and it was like shrink wrap for them and he had to use a hairdryer....any ideas where i can get it and does it work?: Frost KIng and 3M make these window film treatments that you are talking about...You can buy either one at a home depot/Lowes/Menards /Ace Hardware or True Value. YOu are correct ...Use a home hair dryer after apllying the film to a clean perimeter of the insde window and it will shrink to a drum tight and air tight enclsoure. Come spring time you simply need to peel it off and you are back to the summer mode...HOwever you will have to re purchase again for next winter..But for the price you get a lot of value...The 3M is by far the superior product due to the adhesives used on the border and the mil thickness of the palstic...Of o =course you pay more as well ..

Is there a way to fix this without replacing the window? Thanks!: If it is inside of a thermo pane window, then you must replace the sash. The sash is the piece of glass, with a frame around it. You don't need to replace the whole window. Usually false frame grids are accessible on the inside of the window. From what you mention, it sounds like you have an extra pane of glass on the inside. Are you able to open the window? If so you should be able to access the grid and replace it into the slots that receive the grid on ther sash. If you can't open the window, it is illegal in a bedroom. You must be able to escape out a window and door in each bedroom, in case of fire.
