Q:Every fall we put plastic on the outside of our windows to provide added insulation during the winter. The plastice we use is said to be clear but isnt. It always ends up that we cant see out the windows all winter. It really sucks. Does anyone know of an insulating plastic that is trully clear and will allow us to actually see out the windows?
Use pure clear garbage bags and double sided tape on the inside of the windows, only cut out the center part of the bag or sheet, and tape the loose part down what it will look like is a picture frame, leaving you your window to look out but smaller. The part that leaks around a window is the frame and where the glass meets the frame,
Q:A lot of the mail I get has a plastic window where the recipient's address is shown underneath. Up to this point, I have been tearing out the plastic and throwing just the paper part of the envelope in the recycle. Is that neccessary? To what extent do recycling plants filter what's coming in?
The Consumer Recycling Guide gives the following guidelines for mixed paper but it would be a good idea to check with your district council guidelines before recycling anything. Mixed paper is a catch-all for types of paper not specifically mentioned above. Everything you can imagine from magazines to packaging is acceptable. The paper must still be clean, dry, and free of food, most plastic, wax, and other contamination. Staples are OK. Remove plastic wrap, stickers, product samples, and those pointless membership cards, and most junk mail can be recycled as mixed paper. Due to new technology, plastic window envelopes and staples are generally OK.
Q:Do they get melted down with the paper particles or is there someone that removes the plastic parts? Just curious.
These bits of plastic get caught in the screens that filter the water out after the paper is pulped, since they are no good for making new paper. These filters take out all kinds of contamination that would be bad for the new paper. The sludge left on the screens is usually discarded in the landfill, but in some areas it's composted.
Q:will any type of plastic work for insulating windows?
Yes, but some are better than others. Anything that is strong enough that it won't tear will stop air from coming in. The plastic has no insulating value, or almost none. The value is that it traps air and thus resists heat flow. I prefer a crystal clear plastic because it looks better.
Q:Ok, I just moved in to my own apartment this past Spring, and it's an older duplex (with a lot of friggin windows-31 to be specific). So trying to keep the heat in this winter is a huge issue. I've heard of covering the windows with plastic to help, but I'm also looking at thermal shades (window quilts, etc.). My question would be which of these would keep more heat in? Or should I do both? (I would make my own if doing the quilts...so if anybody has any links to a really easy way to make them that would be very much appreciated as well! ) Money is tight, so I'm trying to avoid the problem to begin with..
Where the window body mets the siding, must be caulked round. The home windows being new, must be sealed inside themselves. Therefore,. the one expertise hole might be wherein the brand new window body meets the residence at the external.
Q:Do they still make them. Like the ones we used to have in the 70's and 80's. Or is it an outdated concept? If yes, where can I find them or how can I make one? The pole has to be about 8 feet long. thanks! : )
Do you mean like the ones where you pull them down and they unroll, and then to open them back up you pull down slightly and push them back up? I have those and I got them at the Home Depot. You can special order them in whatever size you want. And, they're fairly inexpensive. I have them on two picture windows with a southwest exposure, one about 6 feet long and the other about 7 feet long. I also have 2-inch horizontal mini blinds on those windows. But, the blinds are so long and heavy that they don't completely close all the way. So, I had to install the roll-up blinds behind them. And, they work great.
Q:they are white and look dingy
i think you should use the washig up liquid, or an all purpose cleaner. with warm water not cold.
Q:The city requires me to separate paper and plastic into two different bins. I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?
You don't have to do this, but it will be easier for the city recycling center to recycle it. Yes, you can put the plastic window part into the plastic recycling bin. :D
Q:Can YOUHOOS at Yahoos give me an idea where I can find a sheetof heavy clear/ or even transparent plastic to put over my window thatnot like this cheap garbage I used from Frost King at home depot.. The last stuff came from a roll and was heavy duty and I don't need a roll of it, I'm just drawing a blank here. And this boxed up stuff sold in cheap discount stores really is garbage 1 mil junk.. Oh, and yes, this is their outdoor stuff , not the shrink indoor kit.... The window is about 4 ft x 6 ft..... 1950 era.....(hence the need for plastic ). I've got a few smaller as well... Thank You hoos....
I am not sure why everyone is saying things like plastic and duct tape! I am sure that would not make for a beautiful awakening and definitely not much of an eye candy from inside or out! Like Carol Q was saying, you can purchase caulking, that is all good. However, you can also purchase rolls of window and door insulation strips. Works great! You can also purchase a spray bottle of foam insulation for your outlets or any cracks that you feel a draft coming from. If your windows are really outdated, you may have to go with plastic OR invest in one window at a time (if ya need) for better/thicker windows. Insulation above your room and around you room in the walls is also very important if you really want the freezing (lol) to end. Good Luck and stay warm!! ( keep your robe, hairdryer, and or electric blanket in bed at all times. lol jk.)
Q:My son sprayed 50 SPF sunscreen on the front of our washer and dryer I have tried everything and nothing seems to take it off. It just leaves a haze on the clear plastic. Any suggestions?
Try vinegar and water...It should do the trick.
