- Get our there and check rummage sales, end hand stores, antique stores. Just because they say it's an antique store, that doesn't mean that they only have antiques. You will be surprised what you can find only because people decide to make a few changes in their own homes. I often see rugs of all kinds, in good condition at rummage sales. I've purchased a few through the years and never pay that much for them. Besides you can always do some dickering about prices. I never pay what they ask for at any rummage sale I might stop at. Might even be able to dicker down prices at 2nd hand stores. I've done that too at 2nd hand stores. You might want to consider double tape to keep you rug in place. However you can check that out once you have the carpet in your home. There out there ... you just have to find them. The fun is in the hunt + dickering. Not to mention saving a lot of money to put toward something else.

- The store I work at sells carpet and I work in the flooring department. 800sq.ft. = approximately 89 sq.yds. carpet on special pricing costs about $20/sq.yd. $20 x 89 = $1790 pad runs $5.31/sq.yd. x 89 = $473 basic labor = $199 there is a $4.99 per step charge average is 12 steps 12steps x $4.99 = $60 total for the room is about $2522. That is for them to come in and install the carpet. that does not include removal of carpet or furniture moving. The pad at $5.31 is 8lb. with vapor barrier. Prices are subject to change in other areas of the country.

- You can always get a cheaper or more expensive carpet but if you want a guide line you can figure 3/3.5$ a s/f. This will get you and average priced carpet, pad to cover any warranties the carpet may have ( 5 1/2# minimum 7/16ths) and general labor. This won t get rip out , disposal or any unseen sub floor work. Some rip out and haul away may be negotiated into a price, along with furniture remove. But these are a few items you can use to dicker and deal some times for a place to get the job. Always get several quotes with a similar carpet as to weight , warranties stain protection etc. And 1 other suggestion, get it from a store with their own installers. You ll have more leverage if any problem should arise. As far as a carpet and cats with claws, no carpet is safe, but definitely do not get a berber or a continuous filament carpet.You standard texture of plush carpet in a staple system is the safest bet.
