- Q:I have a new apartment with wood floors and need to soften up part of it for sitting, yoga, stuff like this. I love Persian rugs but can't afford one. I'm wondering, what about an area rug that is basically carpet you would find in somebody's house... only not installed or glued to the floor. Just a roll of carpet. I don't know the terminology. This doesn't have to be fancy. What is the best way to go about getting such a thing? Do carpet stores have surplus carpeting laying around if you don't particularly care about style or size? - Q:How do you uncurl an edge of an oriental rug?
- Roll the corner under very tightly to bend it a bit, then lay something heavy (a stack of books) on it for a day. This should work, but if not, try getting some adhesive made to hold rugs in place. You can get it for carpeted floors with a rug, or non-stick items to hold the rug on hardwood or vinyl floors as well.

- Your carpeting is stretching which causes the wrinkles you described. Most often this is due to improper installation. Many installers just rough cut a piece of carpet, bring it in to the room, unroll it, trim it and use a tool to kick in the carpet under the baseboard and onto the tack strips. The proper way to do it is to use something called a power stretcher which stretches the carpet from one wall to the opposing wall. Go back to the people you bought it from and see if they can get the original installer to make it right. Most carpet stores send installers a lot of business and have a fair amount of influence over them. If they refuse or the installers refuse make sure you let them know your dissatisfaction and report them to the Better Business Bureau. Hopefully you won't have to pay for this yourself or take things that far.

- Q:I've bought 3 area rugs Persian style from Ikea and put it on the top of the carpet. they were $70 a piece and they are around55 to 70.they are very beautiful but I keep tripping over them. they wrinkle. I put heavy furniture on them. they move a little bit now, but still wrinkle and not safe to walk on themcan someone please tell me where can I buy good large carpet area? thanks.
- Most of them will move and wrinkle unless they're very heavy. What you need to do with the rugs you have is to buy some waffle weave non-skid stuff to put under the rugs. You can even tape it on the rug with masking tape or carpet tape. Ikea sells it, called Stopp, and they also have a felt underlay called Stopp Filt. That stuff could increase the wrinkle resistance of the carpet if it's used. They sell stuff like the Stopp just about anywhere carpet is sold, and it comes in larger sizes that you can cut to fit.

- Q:I have dark brown (medium chocolate, I'd call it) warm modern style leather sofa and love seat in a white room with 10 foot ceilings (I can't paint). The floors are oak, as is one book case (modern lines, arts and crafts style detail). The feet of the sofa are a dark walnut color. The accent pieces in the room will be yellow hues (artwork, vase, throw pillows). What sort of area rug should I get? Colors, patterns? Links to examples would be awesome. I'm getting more furniture, but I think the rug could really warm up the room. I'm concerned about getting something that looks too country or contemporary against the modern lines of the furniture.
