- Q:Is $4 a square foot a good price for labor? How about $1.49 for each 20x20 porcelein tile? Those are my quotes and want to see if I should do it. In Texas and they told me it will include taking out old carpet and laying down tile plus grout.
- The ideal way would be to remove the vinyl floor tiles and install your porcelain tile - HOWEVER, the issue is with the black glue under the old vinyl. Black glue was used many years ago and contains asbestos and petroleum. That being said, even if you keep it wet enough to keep the asbestos fibers out of the air, you still have petroleum residue on the floor which WILL interact with the thin set and the tiles will not stay down. I run into this ALOT in older homes and businesses, and it is best left alone, and proper steps taken to go over it. Put down wonder board, backer board, underlayment....whatever they call it in your area, and install your porcelain on top of that. Leave the old vinyl and adhesive alone.
- Q:Okay so i live in an apartment and i cant EVER get mant. out here to fix this... the stuff thats between the tiles is missing and it looks gross and then the white rubber stuff that sits between the tub and the tile is coming off in random places.... what is this stuff called and would i be able to fix this junk myself???The white stuff that connects the tubs looks like that white stuff they use to connect the base boards to the hardwood floor...
- The white stuff between the tiles is grout or a substance you can buy in any hardware store and apply yourself. The rubbery stuff around the tub is caulking which also can be bought at a hardware store. Be sure to ask for types of caulking for specific uses, such as tubs. That goes for the grout as well.
- Q:What is the finish height of tile after grout and tile??? For example if I were to lay tile how much would it bring up the floor?? 1half inch???
- I answered a similar question to this a couple of weeks ago. I just put in approximately 300 sq feet of ceramic tile in new construction. Using 5/16 cement board screwed to sub floor. The finished height is approximately 3/4. This includes the cement board, thinset mortar and tile. There are multiple ways of increasing the thickness, like put layer of thinset down before installing cement board (adds approx 1/8) or use multiple layers of cement board you can get it from 1/4 to 3/4. Use more or less thin set under tile. Best to measure the thickness of tile and cement backer board. Then add in 1/8 to 1/4 inch for thin set to get approx thickness.
- Q:Specifically, what type of drill bit is required that won‘t chip the tile.
- I have also used a carbide tipped bit on several occasions to drill tile. The key is to have a sharp bit and to use a pointed center punch to put a very small chip in the surface prior to starting to drill the hole. Make the chip at the center of the point where you want the hole by lightly tapping with a hammer. You don't need much of a chip but it keeps the drill bit from wandering around when you first start drilling. Also a variable speed drill that you can start at a very low speed it also helpful.
- Q:The kitchen I want to order is a light cream/beige color. The tiles in my kitchen which would also be the backsplash are white. Does light cream and white work together? The counter top would be a grainy white and cream color. I wanted another countertop but it is not available. Should I paint the tiles? And if so how? Thanks
- Keep the tiles and change the grout color instead since its cheaper to change the grout its a great way to make the tiles work for you... If you choose to paint use the same paint that you would use for the tub..There are drawbacks to painting. you will not get a nice finish unless you use the proper brush.. or roller..

- Bathroom tiles, wash after you have finished your shower, Yes it sounds silly, just had a shower and have to start cleaning the tiles. But this is the best time , all that condensation will make it easy, just use a cotton cloth and wipe. Open the widow, and they will be clean dry and shiny, As for floor tiles , use boiling hot water, a clean mop. Most of the time I don?t use floor cleaner for the floors . The water is so hot any germs will be boiled. all so the floors dry quicker this way and leave no streaks
- Q:I was wondering if self stick vinyl tile would work well on bathroom walls and if it would stick well to sheet rock or if i have to replace the sheetrock with plywood?
- get ceramic tiles installed Home Depot will guide you on how to do it yourself but don't use floor tiles for a wall it will look tacky for one and if you ever decide to remove them you will have to replace the dry wall because the adhesive will pull out the back of it that is covered by glue .
- Q:I want to install Travertine tile to a fireplace surround. This would be travertine tile directly to sheetrock, painted with flat latex paint. This areawould never see moisture other than something the wet grout and sealer. Is this OK? Will the sheetrock hold the weight of the tiles? What prep is needed? Or am I asking for trouble?
- Directly to the wall in your situation will work fine. You are better off using a thin set ( latex or a latex modified the bag will say) I ve done 100 s of FP s this way I would use a metal edging on the inside of the surround rather than a caulk or grout, since both will look bad shortly from the metal on the fire chamber will expand and contract. Don t forget to seal the stone at least once before installation ( I do all mine twice before installation ) This so you don t stain it w/ glues, thin sets or grouting.
