- Q: I have been doing lots of homemade bread making, home brewing, and home gardening recently and realized that I could try growing rye. Does anyone have experience with this? Does it seem worth it for ~400-500 sq ft? Will people think I'm just neglecting my lawn? Vegetable gardens are common, but I don't know about grain gardens. I'm located in the suburbs of Minneapolis.
- Check on Youtube.
- Q: I need to have my vegetable garden watered while on vacation for about 5 days. I have looked on the internet and found people were using plastic bottles or jugs by filling a bottle with water and putting a needle size hole in the cap then sticking them into the ground a few inches down next to the plant. I've tried that, the water ran slow or it ran fast, like in one day the water was gone. I tried putting a needle hole in the bottom of the bottle and the water leaked out faster. I would ask someone to water my plants, but everyone will be gone that weekend. Got any other tips? Am I doing it the wrong way or what? Thank You to all who answers.
- Have a neighbor or friend come by and water them or get a small sprinkler that turns on automatically. They work well.
- Q: After reading Scocasso !'s comment, I'm really inspired to get a edible garden on my own. My parents used to have a small edible homegrown garden when we were growing up and I remember it was really enjoyable to grow you own food.So does anyone know any good online or catalogue source where I can buy seeds for vegetable and fruits? Or perhaps any tip on finding a local garden supplier? Thanks a lot.
- 2007 okorder It's a real good source of where to buy your seeds along with how when to plant. We love our homegrown garden. Hope you have the best garden ever, Secily
- Q: I'm almost 30 and am due with my first child in December. I have worked a fulltime job since I was 17 mostly in nursing. My husband and I decided it would be best if I just stay home with the baby once she is born. My issue is I know I will go stir crzy after a month or so. What are some hobbies I can do at home? PS I can't do any art things(like drawing painting etc.)because I royally suck and can't grow anything so gardening is kind of out

- Q: I asked this in home gardening, but I think this is where it should be asked. I need a quick fix on how to ground outlets so as i can hook up my satalite receiver computers. Cant afford an electrician to rewire a rental, the landlord is no help.
- At the very least you might ask if the landlord will allow you to replace the NON grounded receptacles; and possibly at least pay for them. Turning off that breaker and installing a GFC isn't difficult; but I might assume your entire place is a non grounded system. Easy enough to check that too, just shut off the breaker, take the cover plate off any receptacle; and see if there is a third wire/ground; not connected. Best places to have them intially are kitchen and baths Obviously the adapter...3 to 2 prong is available in many places. I'd probably go that route with a power strip that has surge protection as well as a fuse that blows in case of a SPIKE, before any surge gets to the appliance.
- Q: My neighbor uses hose to send refuse into my garden. What type of borden can I use to protect my garden?
- Use a hose and spray it back at him.
- Q: I will be trying to grow them as a special project for my 8 year old daughter to have fun in the garden and learn to grow her own food.
- After the danger of frost has past, prepare some loose well-drained soil, plant peanuts 1 to 1 1/2 deep, 6 to 8 inches apart in rows 24 to 36 apart. Water as needed, Weed as needed, watch peanuts grow. Harvest when leaves start turning yellow. More info in links below:
- Q: My vegetable garden is about 40 x 40. I live in Central IL. What should I do for it this fall so it will produce well next spring and summer. I intend to till it up but don't know about adding fertilizer, lime, compost, etc. I see those huge piles of fertilizer along corn fields but the pile is very small compared to the size of the field, how would you know how much of the stuff to use in your home garden and how on earth would you ever spread so little of amount? Ten points and a bushel of tomatoes for the best answer!

- Q: in home and garden, the recent answers are weeks old, and not there. they all say deleted or under review. you mean to tell me no one in 4 weeks hasposted a question in home and garden and they are all still under review?
- I think you might have your filter set to Fewest Answers, which makes you see those old questions (shouldn't be happening regardless but that feature is broken). Go to Home Garden and look for the gear icon on the right side of the purple bar. In that drop-down menu, choose No Best Answer or All, and then you should see questions that were posted today. That Fewest Answers thing only seems to show old questions that have been answered or under review instead of newer questions like we would like to see. EDIT: My setting just defaulted to Fewest Answers for some reason, so I think this may be your problem.
