There are many other uses of them, probably all real life.? I actually can't think of any uses that aren't real life, now that I come to think about it!

- The first one is the company asking you to acknowledge that you did in fact order a phone. The second one is probably the phone is being held up waiting for the acknowledgment letter to return. Is probably standard practice for some companies to do this. It's actually for your safety as much as theirs (making sure someone else isn't ordering a phone on/with your name).
