Q:stainless steel wall ties?
`You are not asking why they are stainless steel, but the function of wall ties. During construction of a house the wall ties start at damp proof course level. At all reveals ie doors /windows, one tie is placed on every 3rd course of bricks and 6 back from the reveal. Thereafter in the main run of brickwork 1 tie is placed every metre distance, starting at the DPC and the 6th course then the 12th and so on. They are not placed directly above each other, but in a sort of pyramid fashion. Their purpose is to hold the 2 skins of walling together, thus doubling the strength of the cavity wall in a very effective way. Stainless steel is a better quality of tie, but are not really necessary these days, because the cavity is insulated. In the old days you got condensation in the cavity and the ties rusted, and as a result of this disintegration you got bulging walls where one wall fell away from the other. Stainless steel lasted much longer because they did not rust so easily.
Q:What is the density of steel?
The short answer to your question is that the density of plain mild steel is 7.85. The long answer is that depending on where you look, or the grade of steel that you are talking about can change this value. A density of 7.88 is often quoted for mild steel as well. The iron melts at 2800F, but once alloys to make the 1008 grade are added, it decreases melt temp to 2750F. Since the melting point of pure iron is 2800F, the temperature is actually decreased by adding these impurities of alloys. These alloys are tested while the mix is starting to come down from a pure melt, steel is sampled. and then alloys below are checked and added to make the 1008 steel. The steel is maintained at 2750 F so that the less volatile alloys don't boil off before combining with steel. Q:Bendable steel for crossbow bow.?
You are trying to use plain carbon steel which only can be bent a little bit if it is to return to its original shape. You have to use spring steel or high carbon steel that is intended to be bent a lot and still recover to its original shape. Most people making crossbows with metal bows get a piece of steel from a leaf spring of a vehicle and grind it to shape. A steel bow cross bow almost always needs a very strong trigger mechanism and a miniature wench to pull the steel bow string into position. You might be better off making the bow of wood.

There is an iron powder reinforced concrete flooring that improves abrasion resistance. However, you cannot get the tensile strength enhancement that is possible with rebar.

steel shouldn't really tarnish, it rusts and moisture increases that. Silver tarnishes when exposed to air and sulfur. Moisture increases the process a bit, but it happens anyway. Sweat is not gross, it's a necessary function of your body, otherwise you would die. A lot of sports people wear jewelry and they sweat a lot. If you wear the jewelry all the time, that will prevent the tarnish a bit. If you take it off, clean it (water and dish washing liquid), dry it and put it in a zip lock back to keep it away from air and moisture. In the end, cleaning the jewelry is quick and easy so don't worry about it.

The price of steel is increasing daily, so an exact answer is rough. A W10x30 is a fairly common shape and shouldn't be too hard to find. For a very rough ballpark number, say $700/ton (installed price), the piece you require should be in the range of about $250.00 or less as I assume you'll be doing the installing. Please don't take this as the gospel, however. Price varies on location, stock, and availability. Open the phone book and contact your local steel supplier. Because the piece you require is fairly short, you might get lucky and find someone who has a waste piece that length that they will give you a good deal on. --------------------------------------... I just checked the AISC web site to verify the number I quoted above and they posted an article stating that the average mill price had just increased to over $1000/ton in May. The best advice I can provide at this point is to buy the W10 now and don't wait any longer.
