Q:I thought at least i would get some first violin chair. THis is ridiculous
First Chair II violin in many orchestras is like 3rd chair first except that they expect you to be a leader. The most important section of the orchestra, of course is the one that you are in. For me there is a great thrill of making the music better playing a harmony part.
Q:I found a very cool shaped very old chair at a junk shop for $5. It is in fairly good shape and sturdy (none of the arms or legs wiggle). But it is missing the seat, which I would imagine was one time a woven cane seat that has fell out. I would prefer not to re-cane a new seat (I have done this before, but I don't find it comfortable to sit on this type of seat and they don't wear well). I would much rather put in a padded upholstered seat, but am not sure how? There is just a large hole in the middle where the seat used to be, and I'm having trouble thinking of ways to attach a piece of wood with padding and upholstery. It doesn't have to be super sturdy, as it won't have more than a 170lb person in it, and will more than likely not be used daily (it will be for our bedroom). Any ideas?Chair similar to this one (no seat)- http://krypton.mnsu.edu/~wayne/Caning/roundchair.JPG
Get a piece of 1/4 or 3/8 plywood at a building center (places like Home Depot usually have small cuts, like 24 x 24 which is all you need.) Use a piece of large paper or cardboard to trace the outline of the seat on the chair , all the way to the outside edge. Using the pattern, then cut the wood in that shape. At the fabric store buy a piece of 1 or 1 1/2 thick foam rubber (back in the drapery department) and cut that to fit on top of the wood. Then add about a 1 thick layer on top of polyester quilt batting (from the fabric store) on top of that. Cut a piece of the seat fabric you want to use about 4 bigger on all sides (so 8 each direction) than the wood seat. Lay the fabric out on a table, flip your wood with the padding over so the padding is on the bottom, against the fabric. Fold and stretch the excess fabric over the wood and use a staple gun to attach it snugly along all 4 sides. Make small folds at the corners to keep it smooth (like tucking in the sheets on a bed). if you're satisfied with how the seat now looks, pick up the chair, turn it upside down and center the it over the wooden back of the padded seat you just made. Use four wood screws just 1/4 longer than the thickness of the chair seat frame and drill through the chair (the frame that would have supported to caning) into the seat wood backing. If the wood is soft enough and the screws are thin you can just use a screw gun but it would be better to pre-drill a small pilot hole first - just make sure you don't go through the padding and fabric. I've done it many times -- in fact just last week did that with two antique chairs from my parents' estate that had blown out caning.
Q:If our knees bent the other way, what would a chair look like?
chairs work on gravity and relaxation. bit taller with a longer seat that part of swings up. irrelivent we wouldn't have survived the sabre tooths.
Q:The fabric is bolted to the chairs.
Try and rip them off. Or turning the chairs upside down and undoing the bolts. Then you can use the old fabric as a pattern to reupholster the chairs, and you can even spray paint it with krylon or rustoleum spray paint! Hope that helps!
Q:Our toddler is a very quick little guy and him accessing our desk is a large problem. The problem is our son being able to climb the desk chairs and possibly fall off of them. We have huge and heavy metal chairs but that doesn't stop him from pushing them out and climbing to pull the keys off my husbands laptop. Is there a special device that could keep a chair latched onto a desk when not in use?Moving computers and closing doors aren't options since we live in a studio apartment.
I don't know exactly what your desk is like but can you put a couple hooks into the side and put a bungee cord around the back of the chair to lock it in place? My son learned real quick if he touched the laptop he got in trouble so he rarely reaches for it now. However we have a cheap office chair on roller wheels that he likes to get on and zoom around the house. The bungee cord does not work with this kind of chair/desk as he learned to tilt it and slide it out. Finally we gave up because the fun he has on the chair outweighs any punishment we gave him so we let him fall off the chair and hurt himself a couple times and he is a lot more careful now. Hasn't stopped him from playing on it but he is a lot more cautious! Sometimes it feels mean but it can be the best way to teach a child what not to do sometimes. Remember that kids are tough and a fall that might break one of our bones or knock us out is usually just a bump/bruise and a 10 minute crying fit. You'd be amazed at how soon a little one is all better with the mention of a lollipop or Popsicle! Good luck!!
Q:I have an english project due very soon, its a role play thing called town hall, we pick an issue, which is bad roads in our town, then we get a role, mine was a person in a wheel chair, so i need to know, do bad roads effect you in any way, like having to avoid pot holes or anything, repairs to your chair? anything will help.
I am not permanently in a chair, but was for a while due to an injury. I was stuck with the hard wheeled variety.. I felt every bump, and the terrain had to be quite smooth to facilitate independent travel. People having chairs with pneumatic tires are less likely to be affected by road hazards. You see people buzzing around in parking lots and on roadsides all the time with motorized wheelchairs and scooters. That said, bad roads would make it challenging to get around, they can handle a certain level of ill-maintained roads, but they have their limits. When your tires are only 6 inches in diameter, an 8 inch pothole causes trouble. Try to think about this from their point of view - noticing the size of curbs vs clearance of the chair, etc.
Q:I'm looking for a comfy lime green chair that I can just have in my room to lounge on. I saw the perfect one on Bones. I found something like it called the Roundabout Low Circle Chair but that's too expensive. Any suggestions would be great! : )
Thrift stores and garage sales have 70's era furniture.
Q:We have 4 kitchen, cantilever chairs that are getting weak (drooping when people sit in them) we want to figure out a way that we can keep them longer as they are no longer available, from the company, to be replaced.Personally, I would just like some new chairs but my husband really wants to save these. Is there really a way to do it without compromising the style of the chair?
Tell hubby that you are afraid someone is going to either sit on a chair and fall out or it will break when they sit in it and they will sue you for not changing the chairs when you noticed that they were beyond their useful life. If you don't mind being sued then perhaps you might at least be concerned about not harming visitors. With respect to repairing them it is a little difficult to tell at a distance as I don't know what you like about them. I could tell you to cut off the bases and put legs on them but this does not immediately sound like it would be acceptable.
Q:Is the European high lift chair safe?
Okay! This theory is that explosion-proof steel plate is such a role, but it is better not to have such a thing, explosion-proof fire
Q:I'm about to get my baby's first high chair. Any features I should look for? What you folks found useful for your babies?
If I had it to do all over again, I would get the Inglesina high chair that hooks right on your table or bar. The baby is at the table with you and they love it. We have the Chicco one that hooks onto tables and our son loves it, but we've been looking into getting the Inglesina one to hook onto our bar and to take when we go out to eat so our son doesn't have to use the nasty high chairs they have in restaurants.
