- there's not a lot of bands that are true satanists. King Diamond is a member of the church of satan. The guys from Emperor, Mayhem, Gorgoroth etc. were notorius for their beliefs also, and were involved in the church burnings in Norway (along with a few murders) A lot of the newer big metal bands coming out, like As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, etc, are Christian bands. Personally, i could give two craps on what their beliefs are. As long as their music is good and they're not too preachy. I think that's a better way to decide if music is good and not by their beliefs. Just my .02

- Every decade has a watered down commercial version of metal that the community rejects but finds enormous success with teenagers who desperately want to be metal but don't want to have to learn to play or listen to it. It was the hair bands ages ago, grunge, nu metal, now the whatever-core kids are the next in line. It will pass soon enough and they'll be forgotten.

- Growling is not screaming. In fact Grindcore is the only form of Metal were vocals are actually screamed, and they use a different screaming technique than most screamo bands. But I assume you're looking for clean vocal bands: Saxon Motorhead Iron Maiden Black Sabbath Judas Priest Overkill Slayer Stygian (early 1990s TM band, not the Stygian that exists today) Slipknot (1980 band, not the nu-metal band) Ogre Acid King Megadeth Kreator Candlemass Shrinebuilder Saint Vitus But there are very distinct differences between screamo and extreme Metal. A big difference is that screamo songs typically have a more punk-like kind of structure and riffs, though it's unlikely that any devoted punk rock / hardcore punk / powerviolence fan would listen to most screamo bands. If I were to list every single Metal band that is not screamo, I'd have to list every single Metal band in existence. I also have to mention that so-called emo kids are not the primary fan base of heavy Metal. In fact, emo kids who listen to alot of Metal are rare. The traditional Metalhead has long, undyed hair, or is shaven bald. They were black T-shirts for metal bands, and often have a preference for camo or khaki pants, though blue jeans are not uncommon among them.
