I don't know what it's for or where it goes to, but most days, there is a distinct rotten smell coming from the pipe. The smell tends to be stronger when it rains or snows. Is this potentially harmful? Could there be some sort of leak?

- Q:Okay, I am learning/having to install the pipes to a new kitchen (home I just bought)..it has pvc pipes about 4 inches into the floor (sticking up) and then about 10 feet hanging in the basement (ceiling area)..these are not connected to anything, just hanging there.There are current copper pipes in the home and they do not reach the pvc pipe (nor do they have attachments for them; only an elbow).I want to know which is better pvc or PEX?And if it is either one,how do I attach it to copper pipes? - Q:We installed sheets of red colored pvc sheeting under our upper deck to provide dry area below. It's spring I noticed a big area which has lots of splotches of dried gray stuff which looks like cement. Only thing I can think of is that we have a fire pit nearby outside the deck - but not sure how or what caused the splotches. I've tried a brush with soapy water, and tried Goof Off, then using a metal scraper which kind of works but leaves small scratches and WILL take FOREVER. Everything I've looked up says to use muriatic acid in water but I can't because it would drip down onto me. ANY BETTER IDEAS?
- Do not use GOOF OFF! Do not use muriatic acid either. You need to find out what the splotches are first. You say it looks like cement but why? Did you have any concrete work or brick pointing work or any type of cement work done to your house? If so if it was done by a contractor he is responsible not you. Any type of cement would wipe off of pvc sheets easily with a wet rag unless you wait to long after. GOOF OFF would ruin the pvc sheets if its the solvent based strong smell type. Cement splotches only appear after a sloppy contractor or sloppy home owner did cement work around the sheets but you didn't specify??
- Q:I am going to be sealing the wall when making the basement a family room. Between the sump pump shooting out and the water traveling through the pipe, it's noisy. Anything that will quiet this?
- You will never get rid of all the sound, but you might dampen it a bit by insulating around the pipes. You can use fiberglass insulation (batts) and stuff it around the pipe before you close them up. If you insulate the entire ceiling it will also keep the family room noise from disturbing people upstairs from noisy people down stairs. (I almost said from teenagers, but that might not be politically correct LOL).
