- Q: I heard that solar energy has a lot of advantages but are there any drawbacks in using the solar panels?
- The major drawbacks are the high cost with low power payback. Also, the sun isn't shining for a good share of the time. life span is 20-30 years and then you have to spend the money all over again. It's cheaper to use public utilities for power, but not as green.

I am thinking of buying the Sunforce 3730 30W monocrystalline solar panel (the best I could find that was that size or smaller). What would be a good battery to go with it? I am thinking of buying a 2V Concorde Sun Xtender (again, the best I could find). But how many batteries will I need? I want enough batteries that it would take the solar panel 2 days to completely charge them from empty (bearing in mind the unavoidable inefficiencies like cloudiness/changing sun angles). Also, what other stuff would I need, like I hear something about a quot;charge controllerquot;? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
- If you are at a location/time where the panel will put out less power, you can adjust the battery size accordingly. And running a battery to empty is very bad for it's service life, so it's better to go a bit bigger.

- Do understand, that a solar panel is slow to pay for itself. Let's say your electric bill was $200 a month ($2400 a year). A solar system would cost perhaps $24,000 so you would actually have paid your first 0 years of electricity in advance when installing the panels. After that 0 years, you start to be ahead financially. It can still be a good idea, but it may not be the quick and cheap solution you were looking for.

- I doubt you will be able to get anywhere near the amount of light needed to run anything for 6 hours a day. You will probably need a battery or something as well. At the least, you will need 3 solar panels, but you will probably need more than that in order to charge the batteries to get it to last long enough.
