wikipedia: High speed steel (often abbreviated HSS, sometimes HS) is a material usually used in the manufacture of machine tool bits and other cutters. It is often used in power saw blades and drill bits. It is superior to the older high carbon steel tools used extensively through the 1940s in that it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high speed steel. Q:Physics! Steel pots and pans?
Stainless steel is less conductive than copper. However, steel will retain heat longer and thus be distributed more evenly. (hence the thick bottoms, but also for balance). Copper on tea kettles is ideal to bring water up to a boil rapidly but since your not really cooking food, temperature distribution or control doesn't really matter. Now if your cooking sensitive food, then it does matter. For example, the use of a double boiler is preferred for chocolates. Temperature and distribution is critical. As far as relatively inexpensive copper clad pots and pans such as Revereware? Well, I don't see a difference but perhaps they did some testing.
Q:What steel is the most magnetic?
Silicon steel is the most magnetic material for making into transformer cores and motor cores. It contains 1.25 to 2.5% Silicon. Silicon steel is usually rolled to 2mm plates as lamination material. Iron may be magnewtic but it has low resistivity. With high silicon alloyed to iron resistivity is increased and core and hysteres are losses reduced. Important silicon steels are designated as AISI M15, M19,M22 and M36. In ASTM, these steels are designated 36F15, 36F18 and many more.
Q:Whats better chrome vanadium steel or carbon stainless steel?
Depends on the grade of metal and how it is tempered. Poor grade or any steel is worthless. Poor temper on quality steel is worthless. I have several 440 Stainless Steel knives that hold a edge very well. But I to have several carbon steel knives that also hold a fine edge. It pretty much boils down to you get what you pay for, top quality don’t come cheap. I prefer name brands like Puma, Buck, S.O.G, Gerber and Old Timer. These brands have never failed me yet. A $5.00 knife is a $5.00 knife , where as S.O.G, and Puma can run you a couple hundred dollars easy. But I have field dressed 5 deer and that was cutting through the pelvic bone of all 5 deer before dulling my Puma, but back in 1978 that puppy cost me $65.00. For Tactical knives S.O.G is my favorite. Don’t be fooled by the cheesy Rambow survival knives, remember the key word is survival so your life may some day rest on the quality knife you buy. It don’t have to have a cheap compass or hollow handle to hold fish hooks and matches. It needs to be a knife you can bet your life on. Look at the knives that the military special forces use today S.O.G makes up most of them Either the S.O.G “Seal pup” used by the Army Rangers or the full sizes “Seal” used by other military special forces teams. ( my son was a trainer for the U S Army Rangers and he was issued a S.O.G Seal Pup) I would suggest you invest in a high quality knife, you can always make up a small survival kit using quality hooks and matches and a quality compass. Q:Help! About Steel!?
The strength and corrosion resistance depends on the mix. Pure steel is pure iron plus 6% pure carbon. It is the carbon molecules that give it a tough crystallized strength. Pure iron is wrought iron and you can bend that with your hands. Strength also depends on the shape of the beam the most common steel beam is the W flange more commonly called the I beam. That is because the strength of the ‘I’ beam is just a little bit less than if the entire I beam was filled in; however the weight and material savings is huge. Steel itself has no corrosion resistance and is often given a zinc coating just to resist oxidization. Manganese, vanadium and tungsten are just some of the other elements added to improve the steel.
Q:Disadvantages of stainless steel?
For horse stirrups the main disadvantage to stainless steel is the manufacturing cost. Stainless steels tend to work harden, and are subject to their own peculiar forms of corrosion, but I see little implication to either of these factors when used as a stirrup iron or a safety latch. Stainless steel is also subject to self welding, or galling, this would be of no concern for the irons, but could result in the pivot of the safety latch freezing (I have never known anyone to ride with the safety latch closed, however).
Q:Can gold be added to steel?
Since steel is already an alloy (iron with other metals or carbon), you're not alloying gold with a a metal per se. It is possible, though, to alloy gold with steel. Q:How can I tell the difference between different knife steels?
So what does all that mean in the real world of knives. 420 has very low carbon by blade standards, as such it is just junk steel. There are three grades of 440, A, B and C. The amount of carbon in A is about half of what C has. (carbon is what makes steel get hard). Iron is very much like a sponge in that it can absorb and hold different alloys. These alloys give the iron different attributes, and they can magnify each other. Like a sponge iron can only hold so much, for Chromium it is around 13%. At that point the steel becomes stainless. The drawback is a loss of strength. As a bladesmith my knives are generally 59 to 60 rch, 420 and 440 at its hardest is 59 but at that it is brittle so most makers draw it down to around 57. In my test a knife made of 420 couldn't make 5 slicing cuts through rope (most couldn't make one). 440 averaged between 5 and 10. Compared to the lowest grade of carbon steel I use (5160) which average between 25 to 30 on the same rope. I have tested many stainless blades and the rule always the same, the more chromium past 13% the weaker the blade and the less edge holding ability.
