Q:How efficient are vacuum cleaners in preventing the dust and other dirt that they suck from escaping through the air outlet. I'm using a Khind branded wet and dry vaccum cleaner model VC 3661, priced about USD 60, manufactured in 2004. The type that is shaped like a bucket and has its air outlet facing upwards and a removable, washable cotton bag inside. I notice that it has only two layers (slices) of dark -colored Sponge like material when I remove the air outlet cover. Is that sufficient to prevent dust, dirt and most importantly bacteria from coming out form the cleaner itself. It could be releasing the bacteria and spreading it all over the place.: How much bacteria do you think is in your house??? This is NOT something you should be worrying about.... If you clean properly, and regularly, and then do extra when someone in the household is ill, you're fine.

Q:I have two upright Vacuum Cleaners, a 1997 Hoover Turbopower 2, and a 1979 Electrolux 502S, and was wondering how long the drive belts usually last ? On the Turbopower, I had to change the original belt about 3 months ago, as it was starting to slip, which means its belt lasted about 14 years. Is that normal ? Or was it incredibly lucky to last so long ?As for the Electrolux, it obviously doesn't have the original belt, and since I only got it 2 days ago, and didn't ask the previous owner when she last changed it, I have no idea how old it is, only that it still works fine.: At least 6 months to a year.

Q:I can't use brush roll vacuums due to long hair on the carpet which has destroyed other vacuums with brush-rolls. I know Miele Art is one -does anyone know any others? TY.: Every canister vacuum I know of has a way to put a plain floor brush on the end of the wand instead of a beater brush. Shop-vacs also just have plain brushes.

Anyone with a solution?: If you pick up a stink-bug (swarming this time of year in the mid-atlantic and NE), dead mouse (reaching under radiators or beds, for instance) or other critter, that would cause a stink pretty quickly. And permeate your filters even if you clean the cup. Re-clean everything, and clean the hose and cup as well. Baking soda and some of the smell-killer sprays will help with the hose.
