Q:Cross stud is in the wrong place so can't fix to that. The cabinet is large and the ceiling is sloping (attic) so I'm restricted in where it can go. I can see a cross stud but it's not wide enough - when I marked the screw holes the screwdriver went straight through and didn't touch anything. Will toggle bolt type fixings be adequate don't want it too fall off wall with everything in it and break the basin and tiles!!
You local DIY shop will stock plasterboard plugs, same as a rawl plug but designed for plaster board. There are two types, firstly plastic ones with two hooks the spread behind the plasterboard. Secondly threaded aluminium ones that you screw in to the wall with a Phillips screwdriver. I would recommend the aluminium ones as a bathroom cabinet can be heavy when full. I have used these plugs to put up kitchen wall units without any issues :-)
Q:All the gypsum board joints are cracked what is the reason?
After the decoration, the use of gypsum board to create the shape, and some will crack, because the initial construction, the method should not be or missing steps caused by the main steps are: The gypsum board seams use gypsum powder + engineering glue and paste into the paste Use a fiber crack to attach all the seams. If necessary, need to paste two or three layers. Until the fiber belt thoroughly dry and then put the putty and brush paint. Of course, even if done in accordance with the correct steps, but there will be some cracks, mainly due to weather reasons, dry or wind caused by cracking, there is a very important reason is the shape itself has weight, there will be sedimentation , It will crack, it needs to be settled after the good, the next year to repair the joints, repair the general will not be cracked. I hope my answer is helpful to you.
Q:Spackle is not doing the job.
DIY Docs suggestions work well .. expecially for larger holes but this way works great for small holes and it is cheap-- all it takes is some simple supplies (a drywall knife, drywall mud (spackle will do), a piece of drywall, etc. The hard part is getting it smooth and then matching the existing paint.. First, you need a peice of drywall that is 3 to 4 inches larger on each side than the hole ... square or rectangular NOTE After you cut the flaps away below you want the patch without the flaps to be larger than the hole and and all cracks in the wall.. Second, on the back side of the patch.. Cut away approximately an inch of the plaster on the outside of the patch all around -- DO NOT CUT all the way through the patch.. Keep the paper on the front intact! Clean off all of the plaster middle from the paper flaps. Place the patch against the wall over the hole.. mark the patch on the wall (mark the area of full thickness only.. neglect the paper flaps on the patch) Cut the hole in the wall larger so the patch will fit snugly.. and squarely.. To make a perfectly smooth wall you should trim away just an inch or so of the top paper on the wall around the patch area..so the paper flaps on the patch can be recessed into the wall. Paint an even layer of drywall mud on the backside of the paper flaps and fit the patch.. using the mud to secure the patch to the wall. Once that drys it will probably take another coat (or 2) of drywall mud to make it smooth.. Note: Drywall mud is made to shrink slightly as it drys.. regardless do not put too much on. It is better to smooth it while it is wet.. or use a damp spongy when it is dry to smooth it. Before painting.. use a bit of drywall primer.. to seal it.. There are commerically available patch kits that use metal plates that you drywall screw into place..both on the wall and on the drywall patch.. They actually work well I have used them in places where the above (paper flaps) is not practical (e.g., for larger holes).
Q:we've boarded out our eves in our attic and filled the gaps and screwholes with polyfilla. i'm a bit skint at the moment and the plasterer don't come cheaply! so i was thinking of painting straight onto the plasterboard just to make it look a bit tidyer. which would be the best way?, would i need to seal it first and if so how? Would normal emulsion work or would i need to use something else? thanks
No need to skim it. I use Kilz primer/sealer on walls I have built/repaired. You can have it tinted to closely match your final color.
Q:Can you tape and plaster joints only on plasterboard? IE not skim whole room?
you can skim it, or blow it on to all of the wall, do any thing you want to it,
Q:I have some old style plasterboard in my house and I was wondering if there is any good way to smooth it out so it matches my new drywall? I'd rather not have to take it down but if it comes to that i'll do it. I am going to be texturing the new drywall. Could I just spray the texture on the old stuff and maybe hide it enough to get by?thxJoe
You may beed to sand the rough area before texturing, hammer in nail heads and patch.
Q:We have all steel frames in our house and we were wondering how to locate the framework behind the walls so we can hang up big items, like our dryer and a big mirror safely. We have tried tapping the wall to locate the frame but there is no difference in the sound.
Have you tried a stud finder? They can read metal near the surface or do a deeper scan. You can find one at any hardware store or even walmart. It will read the edges of the steel frames in the wall then you can lightly mark these readings with chalk. I am not sure how you plan on hooking fasteners into a steel frame? You may want to ask the pro at home depot or Lowes for some advice.
Q:Gypsum board is toxic Gypsum board what ingredients for home decoration is toxic
Gypsum board with phosphogypsum contains harmful ingredients on the human body, the domestic Taishan gypsum board most of the use of phosphogypsum.
Q:down. The writing on the back says that i cannot plaster on the side that now faces the floor. What can i do. I have fitted recessed spotlights and now need to make good the surface, ie plaster ready for painting. Can i still do so after maybe pva'ing / bonding the surface?
I agree with Woodtick. Use coarse thread drywall screws on the ceiling trusses/joists and rock to rock screws in the field. I hate hanging lids; no sense adding the weight and mess of liquid nails. You should be alright on the lights, the springs that hold the finish ring usually have a little play.
Q:I really want to put a flat LCD tv onto my plasterboard wall and was wondering how much weight they can usually take. I did want to hang about a 32 inch which would be about 25kg...
Locate the studs behind the plasterboard. Use at least two studs, as near the ends of the mounting brackets or shelf as possible. Bert
