Okay, first off let me say that the smaller (49-50) and harder the wheel, the more likely you are going to fall off when riding over a pebble or rock (but this isn't a big problem unless your skating over gravel) the opposite for bigger (54-55) and softer, harder wheels will allow you to slide, this can help with rotational tricks, if you don't get that full rotation you can slide it out, if you have soft wheels it will be harder to recover tricks, the good thing about soft wheels is that you are glued to the ground so you can turn really sharply and know you won't slide.
