FAQ

No. Not Stainless steel, I mean STEEL.Not a specific type, but STEEL.Thanks. xo
Scott, there are 3 types of materials: elements, compounds, and mixtures. Compounds are covalently bonded elements. Compounds and elements are both considered 'pure' substances. Mixtures are not bonded in any fashion. So a steel mixture can have varying amounts of iron, carbon, silica, molybdenum, etc., giving the steel the desired properties (strength, rigidity, rust resistance, etc.).s
More specifically steel wire (around 1/8 diameter). I'm doing a science fair project where I'm testing if concrete encased in steel has more fire resistance than steel by itself. However, I have no idea what the dimensions of concrete encased steel is so I can't scale down. And if I did have the dimensions I wouldn't know how to encase it around the steel wire (do I just poor concrete over it (heck I've never even used concrete)? Thanks for any help.
Yeah, just pour the concrete over it, but make sure the steel is in the middle of the concrete (I'm sure you can figure out a way to do this). What you're thinking of is called steel rebar.s
I bought stainless steel appliances a year ago. I have two kids who like to put their hands all over the fridge and they always leave dirty marks all over it. I bought stainless steel cleaner but it doesn't do a good enough job. Anyone know any other cleaning remedies?
Use stainless steel cleaner which you can get at hardware stores, Home Depot, and Lowes.s
I know that steel wool is coated with... something... that protects it from rusting. I need to know what that is, and how to get it off.
spun steel fibers have a microscopic coating of oil to prevent them from rusting. Rusting steel wool wouldn't sell very well. I would think that removing this oil could be accomplished with any good degreaser, like brake cleaner or the like. However, I've never tried this before. In science class they perform experiments by removing the oil with vinegar. After wringing out the steel wool pad, it is wrapped around a thermometer and placed in a sealed jar. After a few minutes the temperature rises because of the chemical reaction that takes place when four atoms of iron react with three atoms of oxygen and create two atoms of iron oxide - RUST! You can unwittingly recreate this experiment by using steel wool in the process of removing one or more layers of finish from a piece of furniture Hope this helpss

This question gets beat to death from what ive seen online but im going to ask it since im searching for a few new knives. The question is as the titles states what is the best steel for a general purpose knife? I plan on buying several different types of knives, Folders, fixed blades, ect. I will carry them around with me all the time for basically anything i can think of to use it for. The reason i ask this question here is because looking online everyone has a differnt veiw. Some say stainless is too soft while others say carbon will chip and is more brittle. Even looking at just a single type of steel, carbon fort instance everyone has a different opinion as to whats best leaving me kind of lost for what i should get. Maybe the better word would be What is a good general purpose steel?. Any advice is much appreciated!!!!
Do you want apples or oranges? It's that kind of question. Here's my opinion. For large blades (over 6) 5160 or L-6 done properly makes a nearly unbreakable knife. I once pulled my 65lb vice out of the work bench with an 8 L-6 blade. As carbon content goes up edge holding increases but at the cost of overall strength. For smaller blades I prefer O-1 and 52100, these steels have about twice the edge holding as 5160 but cannot pass the 90deg bend test without breaking. 1095 is a fine steel, I prefer to make damascus from it, but when I do make a blade I want to show a temper line as this steel will do it well. Then we get into high alloy, D-2 is about as balanced as they come and for a smaller blade is second to none save the CPM steels. The CPM steels are very expensive and like the homogonous steel come in many alloys. As far as a chipping edge, that's more an indication of improper heat treating than anything. Carbon steel has more strength and edge holding potential than stainless. D-2 has enough chromium to be somewhat stainless but not beyond the threshold that grain growth becomes an issue. One last thing, the grind is important. The popular hollow grind cuts easily but is weak at the edge because it is thin. A flat grind has more mass and done properly cuts as well as the hollow. The convex is the strongest and is best suited for chopping or a polished edge to push through the material.s
I have a need to connect various stainless steel tubes and fitting together and was wondering how to do it. I know a TIG welder is an option but have heard rumors that there is a way to solder it in much the same way you affix copper pipe. Perhaps with higher heat and different flux. I need step by step and maybe suppliers of the materials. Thanks in advance and please I do not need the call a plumber answers as I've gotten in the past
Soft Soldering All grades of stainless steel can be soldered with lead-tin soft solder. Leaded solders should not be used when the product being soldered is used for food processing, serving or transport. Soldered joints are relatively weak compared to the strength of the steel, so this method should not be used where the mechanical strength is dependent upon the soldered joint. Strength can be added if the edges are first lock-seamed, spot welded or riveted. In general, welding is always preferable to soldering. Recommended procedure for soldering: · 1. The steel surfaces must be clean and free of oxidation. · 2. A rough surface improves adherence of the solder, so roughening with grinding wheel, file or coarse abrasive paper is recommended. · 3. Use a phosphoric acid based flux. Hydrochloric acid based fluxes require neutralising after soldering as any remnant traces will be highly corrosive to the steel. Hydrochloric acid based fluxes are not recommended for soldering of stainless steels. · 4. Flux should be applied with a brush, to only the area being soldered. · 5. A large, hot iron is recommended. Use the same temperature as for carbon steel, but a longer time will be required because of stainless steel's low thermal conductivity. · 6. Any type of solder can be used, but at least 50% tin is recommended. Solder with 60-70% tin and 30-40% lead has a better colour match and greater strength.s
