Does anybody know if there are any courses for solar panel installation, and/or what trades you need for this position?: In Europe the governments offer an electrical buy back incentive of surplus solar electricity but to claim the income the solar panels must be installed by a registered installer who submits details of their skills. The skill to install requires some experience in building/roofing work for which there is no qualification and an electrician to wire up the components to the mains. Electrical engineering courses are available at local tech colleges. If you are just installing a 2/24 volt system you don't really need much experience, it is not syncing a full mains voltage in to the domestic mains! Installing thermal [water] solar uses similar building skills and requires he final fix to be performed by a heating engineer, again the course is available at tech colleges. both plumbing and electrical engineers need to be updated on changes and so there is ongoing education costs and licenses. If you can't afford college [two year +] try finding an employer who will let you work and study part time. There is a lot of demand here so few employers pay for the course but some do. go through your yellow pages and submit your cv to electricians/plumbers. Then when you get qualified learn about solar, and set up your own business. As a builder of sorts! Ive fitted systems and then found a electrician/plumber to do the final fix. You cant beat experience.s

I've been figuring ways to keep water thawed out this winter, and this bucket seems to be the easiest thing. What kind of set up (solar panel) would I need to feed this 260 watt heated bucket?: Unfortunately solar panels are low output,generally only 2 volt and very low amperage,so you would need to build a multi panel array with a DC-AC converter all together costing several hundred dollars which would only work during sunlight.Just roughly figuring,about $800. Plan2-Solar charger,battery bank,and DC-AC inverter so it would work 24hrs a day,also several hundred $$. Solar power does just not seem feasible(to me)in this application.By far the cheapest set up here would be an extension cord fromhouse to the bucket.260 watts per hr is a fairly lightweight draw,even not figuring the thermostat's cycling it on and off as needed.Electricity is sold in kilowatt hours(000W/hr).This bucket would use(not allowing for thermostats control lowering it)appx 6000watts or 6KW per day.Depending on your electrical cost per Kwh it would cost very little to run.(In my location appx 50cents a day) or appx the same amount as my computer(325watts total)) Note that that would be a maximum rate,and would actually be less due to thermostat cycling off and on as needed.s

hi,i have 4 solar panels. I can get 9V 400mA when i wired them parallel. The question is: how can i make a regulator circuit to store power into batteries.: wire them in series parallel to get 8 volts at 200 mA, and that should charge a 2 volt battery. You may want to put in a series diode to prevent the battery from discharging into the panel when the sun is out. At 200 mA, depending on the battery size, you may not need much control, as that low a current will not overcharge a large battery, like a small auto battery. In fact it will take a very long time to charge it. edit: But do i need to add a regulator? If by that you mean a voltage regulator, no, as a solar panel has a high output resistance, and that will limit the current into the battery. If you mean a charge controller, if the battery is small, you may need a charge contoller to avoid overcharging the battery. But that is not a voltage regulator. .s

thinking of getting a portable solar panel laptop charger...may be a stupid question but may be a very intelligent one as well ;): If you intend to use your panels inside a plane, answer is: solar panel intended for indoors use would most likely work inside a plane without problems. If you intend to mount your panel outside a plane :) it would actually work better than on the ground - there is more light at high altitudes and above clouds than it is on the ground. I'm not sure what portable in this case means - how big or how small is your panel? Solar panels are known for their low efficiency, so high-power solar panels are too big and too heavy to be used in aeroplanes.s

But Congress is working on a bill to provide a significant subsidy, and Oregon may have one as well. A solar plant costs about $0 per watt of installed capacity, and can produce a maximum of two kWh per watt per year -- which is worth about two bits. Without a subsidy, you are better off leaving your money in a savings account.s
