We are rennovating my basement. There was a drop ceiling and thin paneling on the walls. I took out the drop ceiling and the paneling. The main goal is to get an efficient way to heat the space. The house has radiator heating so I figured we could use the heat from the pipes as the main heating source.We will put in a new drop ceiling that stays above the pipes (exposing the pipes will heat the space). What kind of insulation is recommended for the new drop ceiling to keep the heat in? I was recommended either fiberglass or foam insulation.The framing on the walls is good and I would like to reuse. What type of insulation on the walls? We will be drywalling them. Once again, I was recommended fiberglass but to put a plastic barrier between the wall and insulation. What do you think?I am open to any suggestions.Thanks!: For the walls use fiberglass kraft faced(paper on one side) and no plastic or unfaced insulation with plastic. R-11 or R-13 for 2x4 walls. For the ceiling, I wouldn't bother with it. Instead add a radiator to the basement area and add a new pump and thermostat to create a new zone. Otherwise the basement would only be heated when some other area of the house needs more heat, this usually makes the basement too cold or too hot.s

has any one used corrugated metal (used comonly on barn roofs and in resturant decor). for a ceiling in a basement. ( will be in bar-living-game open area) want to have access and hate drop ceilings. planning on just screwing to joist. would like to know if you are happy with and if you have any pictures.: My best friends have a rustic country style decor and they've used corrugated metal ceilings in one bathroom and one bedroom--and they look fantastic! Both are painted, which I don't think you can do with that fiberglass stuff. Go for it. Theirs are also screwed to the joists.s

I'm looking to move into a new apartment by the end of the month. It's in a good location, however the only down side is that the neighbors upstairs have kids and they run a day care during the day. Luckily I work and won't be home until 5:30 or so, but just by visiting the place today I could hear them walking upstairs and I'm sure that it's going to annoy me.I would like to know if anybody has any ideas on how to noise proof my ceiling for a reasonable price. Is there some kind of paint that effectively noise proofs walls and such, or would I have to wreck the ceiling and place fiberglass or something of the sort in order to ensure that I don't hear them walking or they don't hear me playing loud music and such.Any help is appreciated, thanks!: This will cost you a little bit and I suppose you'd have to get permission from the landlord, but you can buy ceiling covering that comes in larger pieces but has a design in relief so that it will look like many smaller tiles. You use a caulk gun to put adhesive on the back of the section in strategic places, and then you just press it up onto your ceiling...just start at one corner and go all the way to the opposite one and then go back and start another row...remember to 'match' the pieces so that the tile lines are even. This is very light weight material but it is has a sort of foam-like core that will indeed give you some sound proofing. Plus, it makes a very regal looking ceiling.s

Faced or Unfaced fiberglass? How much might it help with sound reduction? Right now Unfaced R30 fiberglass is just under $10 a batt for aprox 30 sq feet. I'm not sure if that is too much R value for a ceiling or if you can even use unfaced batting If it isn't ok for a basement ceiling then I can get some R13 kraft faced for $40/ 163 sq feet.: Well, the facing is a vapor barrier. If you need one, you need one - and it would go to the warm side in a normal application. But I'm getting the impression that you're more concerned about soundproofing than thermal insulation. If the basement isn't much cooler than the rest of the house, faced or unfaced won't matter. The thicker the insulation, the better the soundproofing.s

If the basement is heated, FORGET the insulation. The only thing it is doing is dampening sound, and there are better options for that. If the basement is unheated, the answer depends on local climate. You need more insulation in Alaska than in Hawaii.s

I have one of those fairly standard (US) ceiling light fixtures that is bowl shaped and takes two light bulbs.
