depends on the sunlight. And on the size of the battery. But it may never charge, as you need at least 5 volts to charge a 2 volt battery. Under a full moon your solar panels can put out full rated voltage but no amperage. You do not want to put mirrors on your solar modules because you will just simply burn them out. They are made to use what the sun puts out and the extra heat from the mirrors would be too much. Plus you would have to build something to make the mirrors follow the sun or the reflected light would be moving on you all day as the sun moves. If you was to take apart one of those mirror balls that you see on dance floors and put all the little pieces on a board at angles to all aim at one spot. you would have a lasor beam of a sort. You can melt steal like that. Think what that would do to your solar panels.s

While I understand Search's answer, because it was also my first reaction, am I wrong in thinking that this is some sort of science fair project, for which you need to power a solar panel indoors as though it were being illuminated by the Sun? The question at least makes sense in that context. Solar panels provide modest power even from room lighting, sometimes calculators are powered by small panels, but that is a tiny amount of current. . You'll probably do better by asking this question (a bit more clearly) over in Engineering. It's not really an Astronomy Space question, though there may be some crossover between the two groups of users. Meanwhile, while some white LEDs can be pretty dazzling to the eye, I don't know how much actual power they are pulling down compared to what you'll need the panel to generate, but I don't see why it shouldn't work. I know it's been a miserable spring in Seattle, but, I think we got 3 sunny days last month. With the number of cloudy/rainy days here, solar will only really benefit you in June, July, August and September. There are two kinds of solar panels - electric or water based. The electrics - photovoltaics - are costly to purchase and it's difficult to store the electricity once you make it. A water heater type solar panel initially cost less and can provide some benefit even on partly cloudy days. I have even seen instructions on how to build your own (if you are frugal and handy) I just do not think it's worthwhile in Seattle - if it was Denver or Phoenix we were talking about - then it would be a different story.s

I'm trying to charge rechargeable AA batteries with a solar panel. What guage wire should I use to connect the panel to the batteries? Should I use a diode to keep the batteries from overpowering the circuit? If so, what size? My panel is 4.8V 50mA.
With that size panel, you should be able to recharge either AA battery, or two AA batteries in series. Yes, it would be a good idea to put a blocking diode in series with the panel - anything will do, like a N448. You will want to use NiCd batteries if possible, because they take a trickle charge of 50 mA much better than NiMH (which prefers pulse charging, a more complicated circuit). You can use NiMH if you must. Needless to say, don't try to charge non-rechargable batteries. Also realize that at this charge rate, it will take days, maybe even a week, to charge the batteries, if left out in full sun all day long.s
