It's deceptive, because metal is not in the name, but it's metal, like hardcore punk, metalcore, and deathcore. It is a mix of thrash metal, death metal, hardcore punk, and noise music. Hardcore punk is really a punk and heavy metal mix.

Motley Crue Skid Row Accept. All of these are Metal. The first ones are mainly Melodeath and death metal, a few of folk metal bands in there, and a couple of glam metal and well as classic metal, industrial, black, pagan, speed, thrash in there too.

It typically has guitar distortion, feedback and distorted vocals. Post metal in general is a stylistic fusion of heavy metal and/or shoegazing. The overall sound is very bass heavy, with guitars being turned down to B or lower. It is closely related to avant garde metal. Due to is experimentation and exploration of different sounds and uses of different instruments. Atmospheric black metal is more along the lines of a band like Ulver and Summoning. But blackgaze is influenced by atmospheric black metal. For more blackgaze look at bands like Ghost Bath, Vaura, Altar of Plagues and Alcest. In essence blackgaze is shoegaze and black metal combined.
