- Q: If we invest billions in green energy and put up thousands of square miles of black panels that give off radiant heat couldn't that significantly cause more warming, not to mention the energy required to even make them?
- I highly doubt it because they don't trap heat like carbon gas does in the atmosphere. Fossil fuels are literally destroying this planet and could eventually be it's demise it we don't accelerate it's elimination. If we could make the clock turn back to the early 20th century and focused on harnessing the sun and wind instead of burning fossil fuel as a means of transport and energy, we wouldn't even be talking about global warming or air pollutants that contribute to global health every year. The only thing the black panels to is create a darker surface but not much different than natural colors like dark dirt, dark green grass etc.

- Just google search solar panels or pv panels and you should get a long list of them. That's what I did. Most of the sites selling them will also have the inverters etc that you'll need. Most likely you'll put several small or medium sized panels on your roof - as opposed to just one large one. You probably won't be able to run an entire cafe off of photovoltaic panels, even if you have a bank of batteries. Too many appliances running at the same time. Ask your electric utility company about net metering - you'll buy juice from them when your demand is high and sell to them when your demand is low - IF you can find a sunny day when you're not using juice, but if you have a restaraunt-sized refrigerator you probably won't be selling as much as you're buying. In effect, it won't eliminate your elec bill, just make it a bit smaller. Either way, you may be looking at spending $20,000 to cover the roof with PV panels and your savings won't pay that back any time soon. So, PV is not so great for a business. Much better for a home where you'll be at work all day the only appliances running in your house is your frig. Whatever you invest to solar your house will be repaid when you sell it, meanwhile you'll reduce your bills dramatically, especially if you convert all your indoor lighting to LEDs. On the other hand, the Googleplex, Google's office building full of computers, covered their roof with pv panels and claim to have reduced their monthly bill by /3. BUT, that's a huge building with lots of roof space.

- We just recently had Pursol Solar Systems install some solar panels for our house. We got ours with no money down, found them online, and they happen to be in the same city where we live. Cool thing about switching to renewable energy is that you get tax break... government will actually pay for your solar panels! Also, YES ITS TRUE! You're meter will spin backwards because energy that's being produced that your not using, goes back to your energy provider (like selling it to them during peak hours)....

- Those tiny inverters that plug into cigarette lighters are horrendously inefficient, as they assume you have the car's battery and alternator at their disposal. It's possible that the inverter itself needs 50 watts without even attaching a load at the output. Second, many 5-watt amorphous panels are too optimistically rated, and may only deliver 5 watts in the best sun. Given that, the inverter probably failed from undervoltage at the input. This is why there is always a battery connected. The idea is that the battery is charged over a long period of time by the panel, then discharged quickly by the inverter. The panel is probably fine. You can short the outputs, and generally nothing is harmed.
- Q: i just took a trip to florida, they are cutting down anything that doesnt float and putting up buildings. Most of these cost a bundle, bill gates may pay cash for them, but most people will have many payments. Since pools, satellite dishes, and docks if near the water seem to be standard issue, why not a couple solar panels and water heater. It is florida after all, and if you are allready paying a half million or so for a house, what is another 0k gonna mean to you. Why dont they make it mandatory to include these on all new housing and condos and businesses. With that many the price would come down quickly and pay for itself long before the house is payed off and/or florida is flooded due to global warming.
- Because not only does that just make TOO much sense, it comes down a cost factor, even though, as you say, what's another couple K for saving the environment. Sad thing is, even though they *JUST* figured out that global warming (loved that news story a couple weeks ago) is caused by humans abusing the earth, Americans especially just don't care enough. Our culture is so spoiled now that we refuse to be told what we need if it's not what we want or if it will cost us $5 extra.
