I live in Northern Ireland. Legally, all you have to wear is a helmet (unless you are a Sikh as they are exempt due to their religion) I don't know about a motocross helmet. when it rains you will need some eye protection (I had to drive one night with my visor up because it misted up and I could feel the rain drops hitting the front of my eye which was not nice at all). I would advise getting a proper road helmet as a motocross helmet may not offer the same protection. They are designed for off road travel and I don't know if the testing is the same as it is for road bike helmets. I honestly don't know and this is conjecture on my part. However, I would advise you strongly to wear the proper gloves, jacket and trousers. Also, always wear boots (although you get away without motorcycle ones). It rains a lot here so you have to have something waterproof otherwise you get soaked. A lot of jackets and trousers have impact protection which is very helpful (I slipped on a wet manhole cover when it was raining and I managed to seriously bruise both my knees and found walking hard for a few days - I wasn't wearing my motorbike trousers at the time). Also, they will literally save your skin. If you imagine being dragged along tarmac at even 30mph, you can imagine how that would affect your skin. Gloves are vitally important. The first thing you will do if you come off the bikes is put your hand out. The bones in your hand are delicate and the skin is thin so they need protection. I would always advise you to wear all the gear as when you come off (bikers never talk about if because you will come off it at some stage) they will protect you. I do see people whizzing past with a T-shirt and jeans on and I hate to think what they would look like if they came off. Smoke detectors won't detect carbon monoxide unless it is a special model. if you any kind of non-electric heat in your house (gas or kerosene) I would say it is absolutely necessary. This would include a gas water heater or gas stove. Plus they are pretty cheap. I bought one for a stubborn friend with a kerosene heater and too little sense to buy one. Buy one at Target or hardware store for about 20 bucks. If I remember right you only need to replace them once every 5 years. If you are all electric like we are now it probably isn't so likely to have carbon monoxide without smoke or fire, but I still have one from my old house.

Q:Speed bumps are littered all over campus and I give them props because two students got hit by a speeding jeep recently.I sometimes go 15mph (max limit) and the bumps are bit bumpy to make sure you go 5mph. I try to slow down, but scraaaaaaaaape goes the bottom of my car. Happens like once a week and I'm pissed at myself. Also, I accidentally parked onto the curb when making it into a parking spot and the front bottom of my car made the biggest scrape noise I ever heard, I thought the bumper broke.
