- if you 11st put th flowers onto th flag then fold it lengthways once and roll it up from the fly end toward the hoist (the side which the flag gets attached to the halyard) then attach the rings / grommits on the flag to the halyard - being careful to do it the right way round and have an upside down flag! then take a bit more of the halyard just under the bottom of th flag and tie it toghtly around the rolled up flag in the middle of it - use a slipknot so that on pulling the rope downward it releases the knot now riase the flag up the pole and then tug the other bit of rope to release the knot, wil be more effective on a windy day!

- Most are self explanatory. Sea-chest is a personal storage compartment. Captains cabin is where he sleeps and checks navigation charts. Deck rail stops folks from falling overboard. Kept on her course means holding a straight path to a destination. Wrongly set means that wind or water currents are not favorable for the course as set. Waterlogged derilict means an old abandoned vessel that has sat so long the wood has absorbed water. Abandoning ship means jump off fast! Clambered up the side means climbing the rope ladder to get aboard. Hoisted aboard is usually for cargo that is too heavy to be carried. Properly stowed is gear that won't shift during ship roll and bad weather. Hatch cover is a cover that must be secured for bad weather, and is watertight. Spirited away is normally either an abduction or a theft, but can also mean to leave stealthily, as in under fog conditions. At the heart of it could be a battle, or in midships, being the center of the vessel. Bows of a ship is a misnomer, as there is a bow and a stern, likely meaning the front and rear of the vessel. - The load is not just raising, it is accelerating also. You can add the uniform acceleration of 1.1 m/s^2 to acceleration of gravity (9.81 m/s^2). So a = 9.81 + 1.1 = 10.91 m/s^2. Force on cable = ma = 10.91m/s^2 x 8,000 kg = 87,280N Radius of drum = d/2 = 1m Torque from just the load = 87.28kN x 1m = 87.28kN-m Now find torque to accelerate the 1 tonne hoist drum T = Iα I = k^2 x m = (1000) x (0.750)^2 = 562.5 Since the drum radius = 1m, tangential acceleration at surface = 1.1 m/s^2 and α = 1.1/1 = 1.1 rad/sec T = 562.5 x 1.1 = 618.7 N-m = 0.619 kN-m Total torque = 87.28kN-m + 0.62 kN-m = 87.9kN-m Well, that's close. Go thru the numbers again to check; if you use g = 9.8 you will probably get the exact same answer. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarification. Bill
- Q:what precautions should be observed if a vehicle is to be raised with a hoist?
- There are hoists and there are hoists. If it's the type that the wheels run up on ramps then just make sure all four wheels are on. if it's the type where arms swing in under the frame make sure that the lift plates actually contact frame or designated lift points and not the floorboards. If it's the twin post type (rare these days) make sure the posts center on the front suspension and the rear suspension. I saw a guy puncture a gas tank with a two post lift many years ago.
