Hello, this is quite an ordeal I've got. I am renting a cabin that has galvanized metal sheets as roofing. These are of course nailed into large wooden beans that run all acrooss.The owner and I made a deal, that deal is that I will put up insulation on the roof. However, she wants to put (i don't knw what they are called) big rectangular styrofam blocks (about 3x9 feet long). She wants me to cut them up to a width where they will feet in between the wooden beams and somehow secure them on. My idea of securing them is by nailing a plastic covering over them. but I am unsure about how to do the rest. How will i get the blocks to stay put if i cannot nail them? is there a better and CHEAP way to do it?As of now, if you look up you see the wooden beams and the tin metal roof. She wants it to be insulated and not visible.

The foamboard can be installed in between the beams Do NOT use adhesives to fasten the foamboards or drywall. The adhesive will deteriorate over time and the foamboards and drywall will fall down. Many municipalities do not allow materials to be attached only by adhesives especially on walls and ceilings. Nail or screw 1 X 3 or 1 X 4 boards under the foamboard from beam to beam spaced about 16 inches apart. Screw drywall for fireproofing to the 1 X 3s or 4s and this will also hide the foam boards. Tape and seal the joints

Does snow on the roof help or hurt my heating bill?

I mostly shows that your home is well insulated and not loosing heat through the ceiling to melt it. Think of an Igloo made of packed snow. It can be kept at a temperature just below freezing so that it will not melt and still keep those inside from the 30-60 below outside.

How much access do you have to the attic, or the space below the roof? Are you going to be replacing the ceiling of your room and adding insulation from below, or getting into the attic and adding insulation above your room from there? If there is a large attic space above your room, and not much ventilation, sometimes you can cool the living space by simply installing some ventilation grilles to the roof to vent off hot air from the attic.

If you have vented soffits, you have to stay away from the corners where the outside wall meets the roof. It is best to install insulation baffles to the roof sheathing to keep the fiberglass from stopping the natural ventilation through the soffit vents into the attic. They can be purchased at home improvement store.

Why is the most insulation needed in ceilings or roofs? Just wanted to know

well insulation in general is to keep the inside temperature different than the outside. since hot air usually rises, i think it is to keep warm air form escaping in winter. also you don't usually have a heater in the attic, or air conditioning so insulation will keep the air in the attic from having an effect on the air within the house. that is my idea as to why

We bought a house and put new metal roof on over the shingles. (first please don't say, this or that should have been done, just what I can do now) Any how, we have put a lot of money into the house, roof, all new electrical, all new plumbing, etc., I had to make the house in a "living in condition" with a low budget. ............ the house does not have insulation in ceilings, this has to be done next summer. (budget) Any how, the metal roof has condensation under it, only in the ridge vent area. This drips a little and I need to fix it. Now, I know that insulation wouldprobablyy fix this, but we don't have the money right now, so I need help on what to do? Is there anything that with a $100 to $200 budget can be done? I have searched a little, and maybe use a "spray-on"insulation help? The area is where the gap is at the peak and where themetall overlaps the ridge vent. Use kraft faced insulation for attics R-19. It won't fill the whole cavity, but will instead provide room for ventilation. Staple it tightmaking sure all gaps are filled. Next, hang sheetrock on the ceiling. My brother omitted this step and gets a lot of cold air bleed down. Then put on your pine. It wouldn't hurt to install a ceiling fan up there too, especially if you are using some sort of non vented gas fireplace or heater. They put out humidity.

Best roofing insulation to keep warm in the winter?

I have never heard of aluminum insulation and I don;t think it would work very well. Hot and cold flow along metal very quickly. Up here in Canada our code calls for R40 minimum. That's 12 inches of insulation. You can use 2 R20's and get the same. The R15 the guy spoke of above this is not twice as thinck as R12. R20 is almost twice as thick. Blown in is the best specially after all the work is done. If you try and put batts up there after it's a pain in you youknowwhat.

I have a split house with an attic where I have insulation on attic floor, but the house seems to be cold still, Can I add insulation to the roof of the attic? If so, any options? Thank you.

Its wide-spread to have a insulated attic.. I once said a neighbor--that used a tremendous exhaust fan..and his roof became bowed.. He also would use alot of firewood in his abode.. i imagine that moisture by some ability--damaged the attic area--/
