Q:we are looking at a house that had mold, all the drywall, insulation, carpet, flooring, roof were replaced help?
Sounds like the owners were pretty thorough in properly repairing any damage. If you are still concerned, you can ask to see the professional mold test review. You do not sound very convinced so, if you have any doubts or worries, I would steer clear of it and find a home you will be more comfortable in.
Q:How much insulation is required in a house roof in new York ?
The US Dept of Energy provides online calculators to answer your question based on your zip code.
Q:the roof of my mouth hurts bad.i worked all day with sawdust and insulation this the problem.?
Sawdust is a definite possibility. It is highly toxic and an appropriate mask should always be worn when sawdust is present. Sawdust is a proven carcinogen. Depending on the type of insulation you used, it may contain chemicals (e.g. formaldehyde) or particulates (fiberglass) that can be irritating to the throat, lungs and/or nasal sinuses. Bottom line: be sure to wear an appropriate mask in the future. They are available at most hardware and all wookworking stores. Best wishes and good luck.
Q:How to make a building roof insulated against solar heat?
Closed cell spray foam applied to the inside of your roof sheathing will work just fine. It needs to be installed by a specialty contractor. Good Luck
Q:Can I ask my landlord to put better insulation in the roof?
You can ask and I'm sure the landlord would be happy to have more insulation installed at your expense. There are many factors which contribute to heat loss including how much thermal mass in the home (furnishings, etc.) and how well it absorbs heat, the type of flooring, how well your basement/crawl space is insulated, cold leaks through windows and doors, chimneys, and so on. Then there is the outside ambient temperature to factor in. Personally, I think 4 degrees in 4 hours is very little heat loss. But, that would depend upon what the outside temperature was. Added: The far bedroom is probably the furthest from your heating source. If you have hot water radiant heat and a basement that won't freeze during the toughest times, you can insulate the heating pipes if not already done. Wrapping with newspaper is a cost-effective way of doing it and since the pipe will never get to 451F, there is no danger of it igniting. However, no matter what, the furthest away from the heat source is going to be the coldest. If "far corner" is N, NE, W NW, those are the coldest spots on a house during winter due to lack of sunlight. Here's a tip from my serviceman -- don't turn your furnace too low during the night. There is a break-even point where the energy used to heat up the environment is equal to the energy saved by keeping it at a lower temperature. The range is about 8 degrees on average, but that's here in the NE. This bore out very well last year during a bitterly cold winter that started in October and went well into May when I kept the heat "cranked up" higher at night. I used less fuel than I did the year before, which only had 6 months of normal winter. I used to turn it down to 55 at night, but I turned it down to 62 from 70. I was seriously overdoing it thinking I was doing me and the environment a favor :)
Q:Is it worth to insulate the roof with styrofoam (thermocole)?
You want to insulate at the ceiling joist level, not at the roof-rafter level and provide ventilation for the remaining cavity. You also want to make sure you have the correct vapor barrier. But you do not want to insulate directly below and contacting the roof deck. One of the difficulties with rigid insulation is making it fit correctly and without gaps. So be careful of that. You may have to supplement the rigid sheets with foam spray at the gaps, around wires and pipes and so forth.
Q:is it safe to put insulation in the corners where the roof meets the wall in attics?fiberglass in corners?
If you have vented soffits, you have to stay away from the corners where the outside wall meets the roof. It is best to install insulation baffles to the roof sheathing to keep the fiberglass from stopping the natural ventilation through the soffit vents into the attic. They can be purchased at home improvement store.
Q:I need to know if I insulate the roof of my attached garage or just the ceiling?
Insulate the ceiling, not the roof. Place the vapor barrier (foil or heavy paper) facing the garage. For Alberta you want at least R-30, or 9" of fiberglass insulation. The garage should already have eave vents, hold the insulation away about a foot from them so the insulation does not block the air flow from them.
Q:why do icesicles form on the edge of my roof in the winter when my insulation value in my attic is at the...?
Anytime snow melts from a roof due to lost heat from the interior, or sun shining on the roof, but air is below freezing, icecycles will form. The real danger here is ice cycles that can fall when thawing and kill in extreme cases, AND ice dams can form forcing ice back up under shingles damaging roof. That is why it is often a good idea to install heat tape under the edge of roofs in areas that are prone to heavy freezes and snow.
Q:on a traditional pitched roof construction, where is heat insulation usually provided?
Generally, the insulation is blown in loose fiberglass to around 14 inches -- R 38, between the ceiling joists. Radiant barrier roof decking is often used in conjunction with this method, along with excellent attic ventilation to allow heat to escape. Sometimes, with foam insulation in new construction, the foam is installed between rafters, to create air conditioned attic. This is much more expensive, but if done right, can result in greatly lowered energy consumption. This method requires outside air having a way to get into the home, requires special AC and heat equipment, and if the wall insulation and window package aren't up to snuff, much of the effect is lost, resulting in wasted money -- tens of thousands of dollars, literally.
