You've picked an expensive material to play with. You don't need a grinding wheel, but it's a lot faster than doing it by hand. there are also any number of spinning tools which come with polishing and cutting heads for under forty bucks.

I really want to get into a field where I am building, designing, and testing new machinery. HELP!!!

If you want anyone to take you seriously as designer, get the degree. Given your intended career direction, a Mechanical Engineering Technology degree mat be better suited. It deals with a little less theory and a lot more on the practical/application side. Talk to some counselors about it. Together with a formal education, experience in fabricating and the equipment used to do it, would make a great combination of skills and education.

However, keep in mind that fear of technology and automation has been around since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Critics (look up Luddites) claimed that new machines would destroy/impoverish the working class and benefit only the capital owners. What happened instead? A period of increasing living standards for the working class unrivaled throughout HUMAN HISTORY.

try a hotel ;-). If you live in or are going to a cold climate, an ice house could be useful. You could give it power with the steam engine, and use the electricity to run a small heater, xbox, and other necessities. (i don't think a fridge would be necessary) I heard some dude actually made a working ice house like that, but it ran on solar power.

Assuming you live where there is winter: Plant onion sets either in fall, or very early spring. Well drained soil. Full sun. chomolia, rape, cabbage - seed in very early spring, as soon as the ground is workable. They are all cool-weather veggies, so if you live where summers are hot - plant them someplace where they will get afternoon shade.
