- Actually a touch more than other farmers with similar operations. As others have pointed out they use the same tillage, planting, and harvesting equipment, that's usually the same size. Where I say they will use more is in weed control. Organic farms are not allowed to use chemical weed controls (I believe there's a few exceptions if it's a natural chemical such as vinegar, or a bacterial based spray, etc). So most of them will go with mechanical weed control, typically cultivation. Even if the number of passes taken with the cultivator is equal to what would be needed with a sprayer (not always the case), it will burn more fuel to cultivate due to the resistance of dragging a machine through the soil vs rolling on top of it. In the end the machinery use among similar crops between organic and conventional will be similar, with the organic guy likely doing a little more in this department, and likely burning a little more fuel in the process.

- Machinists have had hard times lately because of cheap foreign imports. The career is probably fine for your Dad, but as a young man I would think twice before trying it. Love of mechanical things can lead to good career though. Try your Department of Labor and find out about their apprenticeship programs. You get paid to work, you take classes and then you get certified in your State for a specific trade. You could go for being a plumber, a mechanic, an electrician.... plus a lot more. Or maybe you want to go to college and be an engineer or an architect. Good luck!

I was going to say that the increased efficiency that came with farm labor-saving machinery, and mechanization more generally, led to plots of land growing in size and requiring less people to reap the harvest. Ultimately, this led to a huge influx of labor (people) into the cities looking for work (and eventually, the industrial revolution). Edit: Thank you for the clarification. As the other poster has said, the obvious dumb answer is the AR, but there were several other factors that contributed to that revolution other than mechanization, so it's not entirely correct. One could also argue that mechanization was a major stepping stone towards the IR.
