- If the tile was laid properly, it can be time consuming. Yes, part of the cost of laying tile is in removing the old tile floor first. Never tile over tile. That's asking for trouble, plus it raises the floor height. I'd recommend getting a heavy steel mallet or hammer and renting an electric tile jack hammer. It plugs in and has a flat blade attachment that hammers away under the tile to lift it. While it may cost you money, it will save you time and muscle fatigue. Use the hammer to crack the tile before you use the electric tile hammer. It will go a lot faster.

- IC did away with the 8x8 tile about 8 to 10 years ago .. They revamped there line to a 10 and 13 inch tile..10 didn t last long at all..Soon the did away with most all the red bodied tile.. So please don t even bother trying.. You will have to do something else , like a border and or accents. There were reclamation places that bought up old lots of tile but none that I know about now.. - The ideal way would be to remove the vinyl floor tiles and install your porcelain tile - HOWEVER, the issue is with the black glue under the old vinyl. Black glue was used many years ago and contains asbestos and petroleum. That being said, even if you keep it wet enough to keep the asbestos fibers out of the air, you still have petroleum residue on the floor which WILL interact with the thin set and the tiles will not stay down. I run into this ALOT in older homes and businesses, and it is best left alone, and proper steps taken to go over it. Put down wonder board, backer board, underlayment....whatever they call it in your area, and install your porcelain on top of that. Leave the old vinyl and adhesive alone.

- I would go with the hardwood floor. As the styles change and you redecorate your house, the wood will match anything you do to the house whereas the tile may not. If a tile cracked and the ones in your house are not sold, you will have to replace the entire floor otherwise you will have a patch that doesn't match in the floor. Also, tile has to be regrouted more than the hardwood would need to be refinished. If you decided down the road that you wanted to go with tile, you could remove the hardwood much easier than tile. Hardwood is just a classic type of flooring and if it gets cold, you can just throw some floor rugs here and there (which would be a good idea in high traffic areas any) and it is as cozy as ever.
