- Q: I continue to see quot; Harry Home Owner quot; purchase these old time engineering garden tractors to merely mow their lawn, when the Zero Degree mower is far far superior and often less in the home owner category.
- The zero turn mowers that I have seen are a bit more expensive than a run of the mill lawn tractor. Some of what I mow is too rough for a zero turn girlie machine. I need the real thing. I also use mine to pull things around the place. Not everyone mows a golf course. There is also more stuff to maintain. when it quits steering you may wish you had an old school yard tractor.
- Q: I live in San Diego, Ca,, pretty sunny most of the year, but can get pretty cold in the winter.. I'm hoping to start my own veggie and herb garden this summer (august 08) but don't know if it's the right season to do it, or if I should just wait. Since I'm just starting, I would like to begin with herbs and a few veggies (tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, snap peas, peppers) do these grow well in this area???As to prepping the ground, after loosening it, weeding it, what needs to be done??Thank you!
- You need to add some fertilizer, (In Australia something like Blood'n bone). dig it in, and also heap the soil up into rows (to help drainage). Someone else was asking about Vegie gardens in the Australian part of this, and one person suggested newspaper around the plants to suppress the weeds. This is a great idea. Go to your local nursery and see what vegie seedlings they have in stock now. Or ask there as they will know what is in season. Goodluck with your garden :)
- Q: I have a small home garden my backyard about 20' by 4'. I have the standard home garden vegetables planted, tomatoes, peppers, basil, celery, etc. I was thinking about planting some red clover in between all the plants to create a nice bed that will choke out weeds so I don't have to weed all the time, put some nitrogen back in soil, and hold in moisture during those long hot dry spells here in New Jersey. The plants are all at least a foot tall now. Would you recommend this? Or would the clover and the vegetables start competing and therefor take away from my harvest? I figured they are all big enough now that the clover will stay well below them. But I don't know if underground there will be a battle going on with the root systems. I already plan on planting the clover in the fall when everything is done growing and then till it in in the spring. Thanks!
- The trick with a cover crop is that you are tilling it into the soil before it flowers to return the nitrogen it pulls from the air into the soil. Planting it between garden plants might not be the best. If you do it, you'll at least want to mow it regularly to keep it from flowering, setting seed, and coming up EVERYWHERE in your garden. Usually cover crops are sown, grown, and tilled under either in the off season (fall/winter/early spring) or for a season in a field that is being rested (growing no crops that you're going to harvest).
- Q: If an online tool isn't available, I'd also take software suggestions. I'd love to have it also have plant suggestions, ect.I just bought a house and it has a lovely backyard that is all dirt at this point. When spring hits, I have to start planting!
- I would go to a local nursery if it were me. They will often draw you a sketch especially if you are buying plants from them. In other cases, plants are set out in displays and by shade, sun, bush, perennial, annual, etc. Have fun.
- Q: We are looking to buy a home with 3 rural acres and I have been told it has a 6 gpm well. I like to garden and wonder if I will be able to have garden and flowers trees etc...? Can we just buy a holding tank for water? Coming from the city any help or advice will be appreciated
- I am rural with a well and septic, and did not know the gpm for my well. I just googled it, and a government website said anything 5 gpm and up should meet normal household peak use. In addition, you will have a 20 or 40 gallon pressure tank that holds water, so your well pump will be able to cycle on and off less. The well pump fills the pressure tank, and the faucets draw from the pressure tank until it gets too empty, then the well pump fills the tank again. this is done because well pumps are pricey and you don't want them to run every time you turn on the faucet to wash your hands or rinse a dish. I have a 60' by 60' garden, and have no problems watering it with my regular household well. I live in MN and have a lot of clay in my soil, so I only have to water when I first put transplants in the garden, and maybe 3 times in July-August during dry spells. If you are in a dryer climate, or it's a drought, or you have sandy soil, you will have to water more often than I do. Don't make your garden too big at first, or you will break your back. It is hard work, and you will make mistakes, and you have to learn to preserve the veggies and fruit that you grow. Plant trees right away, since they take years to size up. get more than one variety of apple or other fruit tree that needs cross-pollination, and don't plant trees too close together.
- Q: I'm planting a garden in a few weeks and i need some help. What are any tips you guys might have?
- too wet the plants won't grow to dry the plants won't grow make sure you make the garden in a very sunny place
- Q: ots the last track on quot;A Brokedown Meoldyquot; I'm dying for these lyrics, I cant find them anywhere! Thanks so much!some of the words...quot;I gotta get home theres a garden to tend, theres fruit on the ground and the birds have moved back into my atticquot;
- I gotta get home there's a garden to tend there's fruit on the ground and the birds have all moved back into my attic, whistling static when the young learn to fly I will patch all the holes up again. Well I can't believe that my lime tree is dead I thought it was sleepin, I guess it got fed up with not being fed and I would be too I keep food in my belly and hope that my time isn't soon. And so I try to understand what I can't hold in my hand and where ever we are home is there too. And if you could try to find it too cause this place is over grown its a waxin moon home is where ever we are if there's love there too. In the back of our house there's a trail that won't end we've been walking so far that it grew back in there's no trail at all, only grass growing taller get out my machete and battle with time once again but I'm bound to lose cause I'll be damned if time don't win. I gotta get home there's a garden to tend all the seeds from the fruit bare reed and begin their own family trees teach them thank you and please as they spread their own roots then watch the young fruit grow again And this old trail will lead me right back to where it begins. And so I try to understand what I can't hold in my hand And whatever I find I'll find my way back to you. And if you could try to find it too cause this place is over grown its a waxin moon home is where ever we are if there's love there too.
- Q: I know enough about recycling and car emissions, but how about activities around the home?
- Often, even when I don't have any washing to do, I leave the washing machine running empty through cycles throughout the day. I find the soothing 'white noise' of the machine reduces my personal stress levels, and helps to relax me. I also believe that there is a tenuous link between lower stress levels and carbon emissions in the atmosphere, since lower stress induces lower frequency of carbon-intensive 'exasperated sighs' and 'drawn breaths'. I know its only a small thing, but I strongly believe that small measures like this really do add up to really lower worldwide carbon emmissions.
- Q: I am about to purchase a new manufactured home that is 2038 sq feet. It is a very open floor plan with vaulted ceilings. I live in Oklahoma and it can get hot here. There are just two of us. I will be buying the central air unit myself. Any suggestions for size and or manufacturer that would best fit my needs?
- There's no way to tell just from your description, unfortunately. I suggest you find three local air conditioning/heating companies and get them each in for a quote. They will know exactly what you need, and you can compare their answers and costs. You can also check them out on Angie's list, or other websites. If the house you are purchasing is new, then you can also probably ask your contractor/builder about it. They will almost always know someone who does that sort of work.
- Q: Apparently the former owners of our mobile home had a problem with something underneath the trailer (leaky faucets, etc) and tore out the support from underneath the garden tub in the master-bath. I noticed what looked like a hair one day while cleaning the tub and realized that it was not a hair it was a crack!! The crack is only about an inch long and is still fitted together, so I don't think it leaks much at all, unless one side or the other gets pushed down. It's definitely not a gaping hole or anything and we do still use the tub, though we are careful to stay away from the crack, which is in the very bottom, about 4 inches from the drain.We are planning on going under the trailer this summer to quot;shorequot; things back up, but I need to know if there is any way to fix the crack without having to replace the whole tub. There is no way we can afford that..
