Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.

Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.

Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.

Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Aluminium (or aluminum; see spelling differences) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite.

Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates.

Despite its prevalence in the environment, no known form of life uses aluminium salts metabolically. In keeping with its pervasiveness, aluminium is well tolerated by plants and animals. Owing to their prevalence, potential beneficial (or otherwise) biological roles of aluminium compounds are of continuing interest.

Q:you know those bags of frozen fillets of salmon you can buy, it says to put them in the oven, loosely wrap them in tinfoil and put a table spoon of water on the salmon and to oil it with olive oil, however the salmon just tasted really dry, i was hoping for a more moist salmon? what can i do?
Protons have a positive charge and electrons have a negative chargeIf the number of protons and electrons are equal then the atom has a neutral charge.
Q:(i.ea little pink in the middle, but brown most way through)It is an Angus Sirloin steak, a little over inch thick and 6 inches long. Also, my friend suggested using beef stock cubes to flavour it how do I use these to flavour the steak? Are stock cubes nice? Thanks.GOD bless.

Q:DO NOT ANSWER IF YOURE ARE GOING TO TELL ME NOT TO DO IT!!! I want to bring my iPod to school, how does iPods show up in metal detectorsWould it look like sandwhich if the foil was layered or would you be able to see the shape? What is a valid reason for having your things? Isn't it the reason that it's yoursThis may not seem like that big a deal to adults but I have the right to have my things and if it gets stolen that is my and my families problemNOT THE SCHOOLS!!

Q:What is the total charge of all the electrons in a 12 kg bar of aluminum? (Aluminum has 13 electrons per atom and an atomic mass of 27 u.)What is the net charge of the bar?
each atom has 13 electrons, and in 12,000 grams there are (12000 6.023 10^23)/ 27 electrons using mole concepteach electron has a charge of -1.6 10^19 coulumbs then DO THE MATH and you get the charge as: -1157796825.96 coulumbshowever, net charge is zero as there is a +1157796825.96 charge due to the protons and the two cancel out.
Q:I have cubed up some butternut squash and tossed it with chopped onion and seasoningI threw a little (1/4c) water in there and covered the casserole with aluminum foilIt's been baking at 350 for a whileI just checked it, almost done, not evenlySome pieces are still hardShould I take off the aluminum foil for the last 20 min or will that just dry it out???
if it was stored in a cool dry place, it's fineIt just may have lost some flavorIt won't poison you or get you sick thoughIt might be some regulation to put expiry dates on drinks to make the consumer awareIt's fine though.
Q:I've created a quot;birthday boxquot; to give to a freind for her birthdaybut what can I fill it with? So far I've got a choc chip cookie recipe and have some ready-made ginger biscuits, but I'd maybe like a few boiled sweets in there as well, and anything else you'd suggest. Thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it!
Best Toffee Ever - Super Easy INGREDIENTS 455 g butter 400 g white sugar 2 g salt 335 g semisweet chocolate chips 140 g finely chopped almonds DIRECTIONS In a large heavy bottomed saucepan, combine the butter, sugar and saltCook over medium heat, stirring until the butter is meltedAllow to come to a boil, and cook until the mixture becomes a dark amber color, and the temperature has reached 285 degrees F (137 degrees C)Stir occasionallyWhile the toffee is cooking, cover a large baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paperAs soon as the toffee reaches the proper temperature, pour it out onto the prepared baking sheetSprinkle the chocolate over the top, and let it set for a minute or two to softenSpread the chocolate into a thin even layer once it is meltedSprinkle the nuts over the chocolate, and press in slightlyPutting a plastic bag over your hand will minimize the messPlace the toffee in the refrigerator to chill until setBreak into pieces, and store in an airtight container.
Q:I'm just curious what fellow recyclers do with the money they earn from cashing in aluminum cansI use the money I get from turning in cans to fund a college account for my sonHe's only two and has over $1000 from selling scrap alreadyWhat do you use your can money for?
Anything will grow moldIs there any way to put a dehumidifier under there? If not, you should put a vapor barrier upPut the insulation up then staple plastic up to keep the moisture out.
Q:A recipe for fire cracker (an edible) is baked with tin foil and they don't sell tin foil where I live.
They don't sell tin foil anywhere any moreThey used to refer to aluminum foil as tin foilUse one sheet.
Q:then released/dropped(1) Describe velocity changes (2) predict final magnitude of the velocity and show calculationsAt a certain point the velocity has supposedly reached its peak.I don't even know where to begin with this problem!
1) The block will accelerate downwards until the drag caused by the water becomes equal to the force from gravity minus the buoyancy caused by the displacement of water by the blockAt that point the velocity will remain constantWell constant until it either hits the bottom of the water or the water pressure becomes great enough to have a noticeable compression effect on the blockUnless this is a very very deep bit of water hitting the bottom is probably going to happen first2) The force pulling the mass down will be 1.3g the force pushing the mass up will be the bouyancy of the block, that is the mass of the volume of the water it displacesSo (1.3/density of Al) density of waterThe force resiting the blocks motion will be the drag from the water, as a first approximation this will be proportional to the blocks velocityFinal velocity will be where the forces balance so: 1.3g 1.3d(water)/d(Al) + kv where g 9.81m/s d(water) is the density of water (1 g/cm^3) d(Al) is the density of aluminum (2.70 g/cm^3) v is the final velocity of the block and k is the coefficient of drag for the blockv 1.3(g - d(water)/d(Al)) / k v 9.24/k k will be dependent on the shape of the block and surface finish and so is not possible to predict from the information given.
